My cousin is taking his 16 year old DD for her first tattoo

Boy, times have changed. Going to get a tattoo together would be one of the very last thing my dad would do with me.

Yea my sister took her 16 year old daughter to get her bellybutton pierced.  Nothing says mom/daughter quality time quite like that.
  • Idk. I guess I'd rather take them than have them sneak behind my back. My mom fuh-reaked when she thought I got one when I was 18. I think some are ok and just another form of self-expression. Now, how I'll feel if A ever asks for one might be another story. :-)

  • My parents were pissed when I got mine. I mean pissed. I can understand wanting to be there for her, but why not wait until she's 18.

  • I wouldn't do that. Maybe at 18, but definitely not at 16.

  • I agree with Belle. I think it's just another form of self expression. Not a big deal, IMO.

  • I do give him credit for being so open-minded about this. I just don't know how I would be in the situation.

  • I consider myself very openminded & liberal about stuff like that but your title made me raise my eyebrows lol

  • My son knows that it will be a cold day in hell before I sign for him to get any kind of tattoo or body piercing while he is underaged. Nope. Sorry. Not happening. So what? When he's 35 and it looks like crap he can blame me for "allowing" it? Yeah. No. My kids can wait until they're old enough. Heck, I won't even let DD get her ears pierced until she is 12 y/o.

And for the record, I have several tattoos, but all of them I got as a consenting adult.

  • That seems a little young. I'd take Annalise to get a tattoo or body piercing when she's 18 if she really wants one. Of course, first she'll get to see the scar on my tongue and belly button from having those pierced.

  • Personally, I try not to do anything the Red Cross doesn't like, but my BFF has tattoos and I once dated a guy who owned a tattoo parlor and had tattoos everywhere except the places you could see when he wore a shirt and tie.  I will not be taking DD.
  • This is where I insert the trite phrase, "to each him/her own." I mean, are we talking a small, inconspicuous butterfly or similar crap somewhere like the ankle or a ginormous limb - covering a la Kat Von D?

  • I agree with Mominator in my kids will not get my consent while underage. I think there are a lot of things you do when you are that age that you may regret and I don't want to be a part of that, especially permanent things... I still kind of wonder why my parents let me go tanning at a young age...

  • Haha, and we used to think getting ears pierced was a big deal! My 18 year old cousin just got one. She's very mature for her age and got something that's meaningful to her (a poinsettia for her Christmas Eve bday), not just some dumb random thing.

  • What a great Dad....holding his daughter's hand while she gets her "Tramp Stamp".  Warms the cockles....
  • I'm not ok w/ tats under 18. Have you ever seen anyone only get one tatoo? Of the handful of people I know w/tats, no one has just one. Id rather that all start over 18. And really, 16 yr olds aren't the paragon of well thought out ideas.

  • Wow!! I got my first one on my 18th birthday, and I was able to hide it from my parents for over a year. My mom wants to get another one with me the next time Iam home, which I would love to do. If DD wants to get one, she will be 18, and I will get one with her.

  • I have two cousins 16-17 that have tattoos too. My aunt took them to get them done. I think they look terrible!! I really hope my girls never get them.

I only have one and it's a tramp stamp! :)

My children will have to wait until they are adults just like my DH and I did.  My tattoo was done when I was 24 and DH got one (his only one! lol) in college.
