Adele has been our girl's name for years... its DH's great-grandma's name, and we LOVE it. It was always quite obscure... it used to be quite popular, but it dropped off the radar in the 60's. It hasn't been in the top 1000 since then.
We're having a boy, so it's a moot point right now. We had planned to use Adele for any future daughter we might have.
However... I'm noticing this name cropping up a lot more on this site, and in other places. Have you guys noticed the same thing? I am afraid it's becoming popular. I blame that British singer. Anyway, curious if it's just me or if you guys have noticed it too.
FWIW, it's still not in the top 1000, according to SSA.
Re: Adele - getting popular?
I think it's a favorite around here, but, as you said, not top-1000. I checked in the extended listings and it is getting a bit more popular ? there were 94 Adeles in 2000 and 234 in 2009. Still, that's not very popular. 234 means that it is tied with Adison (spelled like that) and Samira. It is slightly more popular than Galilea (232) and slightly less popular than Treasure (236).
I'd use it no matter what because of the family connection.
Baby Name Popularity by State
I've loved it for years too. I do think that the singer has brought it back to light a bit, but I'm not concerned about mass-popularity. As popular as some names seem to be (ie. Sophia or Isabella), today's popular is not quite the same as the popular of past generations (particularly the 70s when Jennifer, Jessica, and Amy?my name?ruled). The popularity is spread out between many more names now.
Bottom line: Adele isn't Jennifer. And, it's a gorgeous name.
I will say that i think that this board, once someone post something, that other people like it and start to think about it (which is fine, that's what this is here for), so the board seems to go threw phases with some names! I've noticed it happen to quite a few names.
Beautiful name. I don't know of any Adeles IRL, of any age. If you get a chance to, I think you should definitely use it since you love it and it's a family name!
I totally agree with this. The only Adele I know IRL was a girl in my sorority, so she's 25-26 years old now. It was a family name for her. I haven't met any little ones or heard of anyone naming their baby Adele. I love it!!
Interesting observations!
How do you find the "extended" SSA list? I didn't think you could look at anything past 1000.
it's my daughter's name (although we spell it with two l's because we seemed to like that better) and i've still not yet met another child named adele. whenever i tell people her name i hear tons of compliments. sometimes people tell me their grandmother/aunt/etc had that name but they like it in a vintagey way. i'm so glad we went with this name...but it's making it hard to choose a name for the next baby because nothing seems to measure up to the name adelle!
wouldn't worry about the popularity. and we didn't choose her name based on the singer's name either--she won a grammy a few weeks after DD was born and everyone was asking if that's where we got the name!
