Need help with CUPCAKE flavors :)

I am trying to decide what kinds of cupcakes to make for Hudson's party.  I found a Martha Stewart recipe for chocolate that I made tonight to test and they are DELICIOUS..so now I just need a 2nd flavor.  I found a lot of different ideas online but I have no clue what people like.  DH says I should just do Vanilla...but that seems boring .. so what 2nd flavor would YOU do ??

  • I think strawberry would probably go over well for kids and adults.

P.S.  Can you share that Martha Stewart recipe?  I'm doing chocolate cupcakes for Livy's bday too!

    This! :)

I thought Red Velvet was basically chocolate, but colored red. Isn't it the same as Devil's Food Cake? Are these things not chocolate? I'm very confused.

I would go with some type of lemon, strawberry, or spice!

  • For M's birthday last year I did chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting, and strawberry cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.  And strawberry Whoppers make adorable garnishes for strawberry cupcakes, they're pink!  :)

Yes, sort of.  It has a little cocoa in the batter.  I actually hate red velvet, I think it tastes like flavorless chocolate cake.  Maybe I just haven't had a spectacular version of it because it seems like tons of people love red velvet.  But I suspect part of it is the cream cheese frosting.  ;)

  • I'd love for someone to explain the red velvet appeal. It's like sort of bland chocolate but colored red. Is it just the cream cheese frosting that makes people like it? I don't get it.

Anyway, I love vanilla with vanilla butttercream. You could make your own funfetti (or use the mix!!!!) to make it cuter. Are you doing choc with choc frosting? If you don't want to do vanilla then I'd do choc with vanilla frosting. And then maybe lemon? That seems easy for most people o love. Or coconut!! I love coconut. Or lemon cake with coconut frosting.

If it were an adult party I would probably do something almond. I love almond. Maybe an almond buttercream or the chocolate cake.

The only reason I wouldn't do strawberry is because it's pink for a boy party. But that's probably a stupid reason.

Cream cheese frosting is great.  I'm with y'all, i've never understood red velvet... and when i was little i thought they looked super creepy, like something that shouldn't be eaten... (maybe i still think that, but i'm a little afraid to admit it in this realm of cupcake lovers :) ).

The lemon and coconut flavors pps have suggested sound really tasty.

  • I tend to agree on the red velvet.  I do think it tastes pretty good, but it's mostly like a mild chocolate.  I dig the color, though... and the cream cheese. :-)

I would probably do a white or yellow cake for the other flavor, even if it seems boring. (Although, I do like white and yellow, myself.)  I would worry too much about making sure I have flavors everyone would like.  I like the funfetti idea.

  • If I remember correct, red velvet would go with your theme the best. :)

This.  Personally, I like red velvet, but only with cream cheese frosting!

  • I have a good vanilla recipe I can pm you.

Which ms cho. recipe did you use, I love her one bowl cho. cake.

For W's party I want chocolate frosting on all of them to go with my colors (Huh?)  so I am doing chocolate cupcakes and cho. chip cupcakes.

For your theme you could do a good vanilla but color it or i like the idea of strawberry, but to me it's the wrong season to get good ones.

  • I thought I was the only one who wasn't crazy about red velvet!  Glad to know I'm not alone.  It is really trendy right now, though, so it might make a good choice for a second cupcake.

How about lemon?  I personally love anything lemon.  You could also do a vanilla cupcake that's filled.  Filled cupcakes are actually really easy.

You are so not the only one. I don't get the appeal of red velvet either. AND... I love lemon too, but that might just be an adult friendly cupcake choice.

I did vanilla with chocolate frosting and chocolate with vanilla frosting for Max's. It worked out well!

  • I made these vanilla bean cupcakes awhile back for a baby shower with a lemon/lime buttercream frosting and they were a major major hit: https://annies-eats.net/2010/01/05/vanilla-bean-cupcakes/

  • What about carrot or banana with creamCheese frosting?

  • Thanks! Well, I did cream cheese frosting on the chocolate and it was really good.  So I think that would be too similar to Red Velvet .. plus neither DH and I are really too impressed with them either ..

I'm thinking probably either Vanilla or Strawberry (and I can dye either of them red if I want).  Caldwell can you email me the Vanilla recipe when you get a chance please? suzie0711 at hotmail.

And here's a link to the M.S. Chocolate Cupcakes I made last night .. and I'll also link the cream cheese frosting because it was really good! :)
