Sleep deprived mamas - weird dreams?

Hopefully I'm not just losing my mind, but DD has been sleeping better the past few nights, only up maybe once or twice, so I'm getting longer stretches of sleep.  I'm noticing I'm dreaming a lot more, but these dreams are seriously screwed up, either slightly on the nightmare side or just totally weird, not like dreams I ever remember having before DD.

Is this from the sleep deprivation or am I just finally starting to lose it, lol? Anyone go though this when they started getting more sleep?  (BTW DH votes that I'm losing it Stick out tongue)

  • I haven't had exactly the same experience as you, but I've always had crazy dreams. In fact, I recently went to a sleep doctor (at my husband's insistence) because I have very active dreams (i.e. I sleepwalk, sleeptalk, etc.). I was diagnosed with parasomnia, which is a fancy way of saying that whatever part of my brain is supposed to freeze my muscles during sleep so that I don't act out my dreams is not working. I was prescribed Klonipin, but I've only taken it a couple times. I'm not crazy about medication to begin with, let alone a highly addictive narcotic.

Anyway, that answer probably doesn't help you at all. I did, however, notice an increase in crazy dreams after Jonah was born. So, my vote is that you're not losing it. :)

I probably wouldn't take the meds either, I hate taking pills unless I absolutely have to.  I've never sleep walked or anything, but I swear these dreams are so strange and realistic even.  Hopefully it's just hormones and my body making up for the REM sleep I've lost.

  • I definitely have noticed this on the random nights I get a "longer" stretch of sleep. I'll even talk in my sleep which is unusual for me. I've also noticed that I will grind my teeth and clench my jaw more. So much for "good" sleep!

  • Last night I had a dream that I was being chased by a giant, bright yellow, snake. I have no doubt that my strange dreams are a direct result of little/no sleep!

  • I've been having some bizarre dreams too. I don't get much longer than 2 hours at a time, but the dreams I do remember are always nuts and can occur at any time, even when I nap for 20 minutes.
