Last year I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, so I never had it with my previous pregnancies. I have had two recent miscarriages, and am praying that this pregnancy doesn't end up with that outcome.
I am flaring terribly right now, but I seem to flare different than most. TMI...my rectum is so swollen and inflamed that I am very constipated, instead of the typical diarrhea that comes with colitis. I had just started hydrocordizone enimas when I found out I was pregnant and stopped those as they can cause birth defects. I am now on 4 pills of Lialda a day, but it hasn't helped with the bleeding at all. I have so much mucus and blood right now in my stools or even when I don't have a bm, the worst it has ever been.
I was wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar experience and how they dealt with it? Any tips to help the bleeding and inflammation lessen and to help the constipation (the little rabbit pellets are getting annoying!) I am seeing a specialist at Mayo Clinic, but she really doesn't have a lot she can do while I am pregnant.
Re: Ulcerative colitis, anyone else?
I have ulcerative colitis. I have never been pregnant until now.
I was diagnosed 12 yrs ago but didnt need treatment until 3-4 yrs ago. I tried everything, the only thing that worked for me was Humira injections. It is a immunomudoluator that you inject once a week. I can continue it during pregnancy. I did stop Immodium and Lomotil (which I used to take almost daily to help keep me "safe" at work. However, since stopping them I have found myself perfectly fine. Either I never really needed them after all or pregnancy is helping me out.
there are some women with UC that actually go into remission during pregnancy due to hormones, etc. but some other women get worse.
I also use Metamucil every day to stay regular. My biggest issue has always been diarrhea so Metamucil adds bulk to my stool and keeps me regular and under control. However, Metamucil is also very effective for constipation. It is safe in pregnancy (I saw it in my book)
good luck. If you ever want to talk - page me on the MM board on the Nest.
