not a fan of alliteration with first/last names (all starting with the same letter)... but not against all kids having the same first initial (obviously with my G family!).
it's all about what you two like, though - b/c someone will always have a complaint no matter what you pick.
all the names are nice, handsome names.... some are way too popular for me (i'm not a fan of trendy/popular names (simply b/c i grew up with 5 Michaels, 4 Jennifers, 6 Heathers, 5 Lisas, all in my group of friends)... but think they are all nice names.
i voted ben & jacob - i wouldn't stress about what nick name you'll use or not - b/c you will likely make up your own silly NN's for your child as most of us do. Unless you are 100% against any form of a name (ie- if you HATED Benny and wanted to make sure nobody called him that), then don't worry about it - just see who the child is and you can decide as he grows what you'll call him on a daily basis.
We named our boys knowing they could have NN's with their names- and now call them names we never expected (Gibby & Gray Gray... i don't even know how it started).
I picked Andrew and Benjamin mostly because I have an Andrew and Benjamin was one of my top pics (DH nixed it because he had a coworker with the name). However, we're firmly in the Andrew not Andy camp.
I looove Ben and Jake. They w ere on the top of my list. I wasn't a fan of alliteration, but ds2 is triple S. It just worked out that way. The full name is a bit of a mouthful, but we rarely use it all. Regarding nicknames, I'm adamant against Sammi and Lukie. Hate! I'm not even a fan of samuel and lucas even though those are their real names. I know I won't be able to control nicknames forever, but right now its Sam and Luke. (Mr. Luke and Super Sam if you're DH.)
