Eating before anatomy scan?

Okay, this may be real dumb but can I eat before my anatomy scan? Its tomorrow morning and my mom just freaked me out  saying that she has heard that you are not supposed to eat?!?! I made my appt monday ant my 20 wk visit, they gave me a little paper telling me which suite I need to go to and how much water to drink  but said NOTHING about eating...

I planed on going out to breakfast with FI before we go to the appt. What have been your experiances?

Re: Eating before anatomy scan?

  • No one said anything to me about how much to drink or eat for that matter.  I thought I heard that as well, but they could see everything just fine.

  • No problems with eating!  Eat up!

  • Nothing was ever said to me about not eating... I'm certain if your OB didn't mention it, you're fine. Honestly, I would think it'd make more sense to eat as normal so that your blood sugar levels are good and you have a better chance of having an active baby in there.
  • I had a bagel and OJ before going!
  • If I had to go without eating, I would have either passed out or done something violent.

  • I never was told anything about eating or drinking. I just carried on with my day as usual and everything was great!
  • Eat as you normally would.

To be 100% honest, I drank water before the Anatomy scan but I had a 45 minute drive to the Dr's office. Then I had to wait 20 minutes... I ended up having to go to the bathroom RIGHT before they called me in the u/s room. It really didn't matter- they were able to see the baby with no problems.

  • I recently read the same thing your mom said, that eating could make the baby too active to get good measurements of everything, ect. So I asked my OB at my last appointment and he said studies have been done on that subject and there was no evidence to suggest it made any difference at all. He did say that if the baby isn't moving at all they will sometimes give you juice in hopes it might do something, but even they know it isn't likely. So I say eat! I think I would starve to death if I skipped breakfast.

  • Thanks everyone! My appointment is at 10:45 am so I will probably not have to much to eat but still a little something, my nausea is still in high gear.

  • I went for mine after work. They didn't give me anything about how much to eat or drink. I actually emptied my bladder right before I had the scan. They had no problems getting pictures of results. Many women will say to have something with sugar to get the baby to move around but my DS moves like crazy without sugar. I would just eat what you want and have a nice morning :)

  • DH and I went out for a huge lunch before the scan and had no problems. The tech actually had me eat some candy durring the scan to get the baby to move into a better position.

  • The paper that my OB's office gave me this time said to eat within the hour before your appt.  I think every place is different though.  Some make you drink a ton of water prior (which I couldn't imagine how uncomfortable these ladies must be during the u/s).

  • The receptionist at my dr's office told me to eat something a little sweet to get the baby moving. I TOTALLY took advantage of her advice and got a chocolate frosted donut and an oj on my way to my appointment.  It certainly did the trick and Baby Girl put on quite the show waving to us and all. :-)
  • Mine's tomorrow too!  My office did not tell me that I cannot eat nor did they give me a specific amount of water to drink.  They just told me to come with a full bladder.  I'm sure you'll be fine if you eat.

    Good luck!!!!

  • Mine was at 1pm and I had lunch beforehand. It's fine.
  • I don't think eating is an issue but you may want to be careful to not eat something that gets baby moving a lot or eating right before like I did. Our little guys was moving so much that the tech had trouble getting some of her pictures.  Not thinking I had sparkling juice on the way to the appt... dumb since I know that bubbly things = flutters.

We have to go back and have another ultrasound in 3 weeks so she can get a few more pics. I will NOT be eating for like an hour before that appt in hopes that it will keep our little guy a bit more calm.
