Another speech question

Is it typical for a child to say a word once, then not again for a long time?

DS has a few things he says a lot like "momomom" and "diddid" and "up", but the other day, my dad was holding him and out of nowhere he said "gaaampaa". He also said "nana" once while my mom was playing with him last week. Is this just coincidental sound-making, or is there meaning behind it?

Re: Another speech question

  • My DD does that all the time.  She is acutally much younger than your little one and only has 30 words. She actually is getting her Speech Eval tomorrow.  I am not sure if it is normal or not.

    Good luck to you.

  • Thanks! I am pretty sure we are not on the typical timeframe for most things.

I just don't know whether to get excited or not, when I hear these words! :)

  • Yes (according to every speech, physical, and occupational therapist I have asked).
