Baby Showers

How much to spend at friend's shower?

Hi Ladies,

What do you think is a appropriate amount to spend on a baby shower gift for a really good friend?  Both DH and I are good friends (one of whom is his former roommate from college) with the couple and have known them for 10 years.  I dont want to go too far overboard but I do want to make sure to get them a nice gift.  We are doing well financially so money isn't an issue I just dont want to look like the crazy person who doesn't know when to stop.

Thanks!

Re: How much to spend at friend's shower?

  • i guess if money is no object and it's a really good friend i'd say $100?  i'm a total cheapskate, so that seems like a lot to me, but not overboard.

  • depends on what you get.  if you splurge for a large gift, i would say keep it under $150 or so.  but you could get her a ton of little things and easily spend less than $75.  another nice idea - get her a gift certificate for a massage then get like $40-50 worth of baby gear like burping cloths, onesies, stuff like that.

  • This totally depends on your group, what is acceptable/normal to spend, and income.  For people I am really close with I spend between 100-120 usually.  Other friends and family around $40.  With our baby shower our close friends seem to have been in the same range based on the presents we received.

  • I guess I may be cheap, but I've never spent over $50 on a gift for anybody (weddings included).  Close friends and family get probably close to $50, but for everyone else it's probably closer to $20.

  • i think it depends.  i never spend less than fifty for a friend so i think one hundred to one fifty if appropriate.  just dont buy a bunch of small things that are going to take an hour to open.

For most friends, I spend $20-30. For close friends, close to $100. For family, over $100. When I throw a shower for a close friend or family member, I spend about $200 on the shower and under $50 on a gift.

  • $100, but I might spend more if there was a large gift on her registry that was a little more than this (maybe $125)
  • For me a normal gift would be like $50. So for a very very good friend I'd likely spend $150-175 or so.

But like a pp mentioned it really varies on what is the norm in your circle of friends/family.

  • My college roomie gave us a $100 gift card.  I'd consider her a good friend, but I only see her about once a year.  My closer friends spent less ~$30 so it's hard to say.  If money is no object I'd say get them something medium high (like a high chair) but don't go crazy (like a crib!)

  • $100+ for close friends (babies, weddings), over $100 for family (we bought my nephew's dresser, about $250, when he was born) and around $50 for less-close friends (I know that's weirdly worded).
