How to get baby on health insurance

Hello,

I am pregnant with my first baby. I have insurance through my job, but we do not have good coverage for dependents. My husband gets his insurance through the VA, so we are trying to figure out how we will get the baby insurance once it arrives.  Anyone have any advice on finding an individual plan for a newborn? Is that even possible?

Thank you!

  • I keep noticing how many people have viewed your post and not replied. I really don't think anyone has the answer to this. I'm not really sure. I would think that if you have coverage through your employer, even if the dependent coverage isn't great, that would still be your best option. I think any of the big insurance companies would carry a policy on a minor as long as someone of age was footing the bill. If it is a question of not being able to afford insurance coverage on a dependent due to insufficient income then you may want to check out AHCCCS coverage for your baby. I hope you find the solution that is best for you.

  • Why is your dependent coverage not great?  I would think that would be better than buying a private policy to cover an infant.  I'm guessing if you are both working that you don't qualify for AHCCS.

Can you sign up for a new plan during open enrollment?
