SO and I were discussing boy names yesterday (we're taking a breather on girl names for a bit) and came up with "Maverick" as a possibility. I think it's a strong name, it's in the top 500 or so for boys and rising in popularity (so, it's a "real" name w/o being too abundant), and I like what it means and how it sounds. SO thinks it's okay, but also that I'm crazy. Top Gun and Mel Gibson's flick aside (I really don't think a kid would get ridiculed on the playground for a movie from the 80's . . . prob won't even see it till middle school or high school, if that), what do you think of the name? Do you love it, hate it, or think it's a crime to name a boy Maverick?

I HATE Maverick. I think ``Top Gun`` and MaCain/Palin refering to themselves as ``mavericks.`` I hate it so much, and I`ve met 3 little boys named this in the past few months.
I don't think of it as a usable name at this point. I dislike for a) Top Gun b) popular dog name c) lumped in the same category as Hunter and other occupational names (even though it isn't an occupation itself.)
Love it. On my list. MY DH doesn't like it at all. I really like it!

This is not a person's name.
Well, it was some guy's last name. And is still a proud family name. You might want to check out their viewpoints on their family history before using a name that has a lot of meaning to the people it belongs to(https://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/weekinreview/05schwartz.html).
It is, however, a mascot name, and works alright as a nickname among Top Gun fans.
Hmmmm. Dr. Maverick Jones. President Maverick Jones. Professor Maverick Jones.
No.
Save it for a dog.

I teach a kid named Maverick. His brother's name is Major. That family makes me think the name is ridiculous.
(read it. you know you want to.)
