TTC after 35

anyone seeing a therapist for IF?

I bit the bullet and made an appointment. I'm hoping it will help me with processing the constant disappointment and sadness and how to learn to not let it take over my entire life. I've never been to one before so I'm not sure what to expect.  I've been reading some ladies' past blogs about infertility and it just really hit me how VERY LONG this entire process can take even with a good ending of a birth(don't get me started on unsucessful ventures).  I know I can't continue the way I've been dealing(or not dealing) with this for the long haul.

  • I've never done it but I most certainly have given it some serious thought.  Good luck to you...I think it would be really helpful.  Keep us posted if this is something that is helping you through this process.

    Also, *hug*.

  • I went to a psychologist associated with my REI clinic when I was having my IUI's, and she was tremendously helpful.  In fact, I'm calling today for another appointment.  She is intimately aware of the struggles associated with infertility, as well as the treatments, and I can't say enough good things about my experience.  If your clinic has someone they recommend, I'd go with them.

In the past, I called my EAP through work to try to find a therapist who I could speak to about work anxiety and stress, but they just gave me a laundry list of people who were in-network, which I didn't find helpful.  In fact, it created more stress because I had no idea where to start!

Good luck.  Wish both of you the best, and sending hugs your way.

  • I have considered it.... hoping to get my husband on board.
  • I have had a lot of therapy over the years and I highly recommend it in general--if you find a therapist you like.  The one I'm seeing right now just happens to specialize in women's fertility issues.  I only see her about 1x/month (which I have tried to schedule around my IUI results) and it is really, really helpful.  I don't think there's anything particular to "expect"--it's just a place to vent, kind of like this board, but with someone who's professionally trained to deal with it rather than a community of those going through it.  It was with the therapist, for example, that I worked out my massive disappointment about the failure of IUI #1 in particular.

I haven't, but I would if we were staying here a bit longer. I also find myself letting this take over my life (mentally) and don't know how I am going to live this way for years potentially.

Have you looked into any RESOLVE support groups? I was checking out my local chapter online and see they meet once a week. I was going to email the person in charge and ask her what it is like.

  • I have considered it. Especially after this latest dissappointment.

My ister saw a grief counselor after her second miscarriage. She said it really made a difference and  helped her get through it.

I checked out their website at the suggestion of an acquaintance who has been through this. There is no RI chapter and I didn't want to travel up to Waltham. Laziness basically.

  • I saw a "life coach" for quite a while after my divorce and found it to be incredibly helpful.  I also dated a psychologist for three years and refer MANY patients for psychotherapy, so I believe in it and recommend it highly.

  • I've been going to personal sessions & couples sessions.  They have  r-e-a-l-l-y helped me process all of my feelings, as well given me support to better communicate with my DH.  Although my friends & family have all tried to support me & DH, none of them have gone through miscarriages or lengthy TTC processes.

I definitely recommend finding someone you're comfortable talking with.  You deserve all the support that you need during this trying process!

    Best wishes!
