Preemies

Milestone Question...

Did you find that your LO hit some milestones according to actual age, but then hit some other milestones according to adjusted age?

Q and H are doing some things according to their actual age (holding head up, rolling side to side, pushing up with arms when on belly) but then they aren't smiling consistantly, or tracking things with their eyes. Is this something you found with your preemie?

Re: Milestone Question...

  • Yes. You could have written this post about my son. He's 15 weeks (11 weeks adjusted) and in strength type activities (holding head up, pushing up with arms, etc.) he is performing at actual age but he has yet to social smile and doesn't track very well. My pediatrician said that it could just be that his eyesight hasn't developed enough for him to make out facial expressions to imitate them.  Since, in his case, he also seemed to have trouble focusing and had a minor case of nystagmus (involuntary movement of the eyes), he was referred to a neurologist and possibly to an opthamologist.

One revelation I had recently as I was looking at the lists of milestones and suggested timelines, is that I was so focused on the things my baby was not doing, that I forgot to acknowledge the things he was doing.  It's helped me put some things in to perspective.

  • LO has always hit her milestones according to birth age, rather than adjusted age. Now that she's a toddler though, she's 15m, (13 adjusted) and not yet walking. She's close, but only a few steps to date.

    Her Pedi isn't concerned
