How long is a car seat *good* for?

I'm flying with C this weekend to see my parents. We have someone that has a car seat we can use.  Her kiddo just had his 4th birthday.  Would the seat her expired by now?

If it was new when he used it, it should be fine.  We are using the same infant carrier with Elijah that we used with Joshua and he just turned four.  The date stamped on the bottom said Dec 2012.

Generally 6 years but they have an expiration date on them.
