I have never understood the obsession with red velvet cake..

unless I am missing something, I have always been under the belief that red velvet is merely chocolate cake with red food coloring?

So, why LOVE red velvet, unless you think that red colored chocolate cake tastes better?

Edumucate me.

Re: I have never understood the obsession with red velvet cake..

  • The only thing I can think of is that bloody armadillo cake from Steel Magnolias.

It's got to be a Southern thing. I had never even heard of red velvet cake before I went to college in Maryland.

  • Ah...you've never had my mom's. Moist, sweet, thick and light at the same time, perfect icing. Delicious. But I only like hers, not what I make myself or what I can buy in a store or restaurant.

  • I don't know that it tastes any better/different, but it's purty.
  • I think that it's the combo of the mild chocolate cake with the cream cheese frosting.
  • Ugh. Not a fan, especially of the icing. I might barf thinking of it. My mom used to make it all the time. Lari, did you hear about it from classmates from the south? ... b/c Maryland is definitely not the south.

  • I think the word "moist" makes me more sick than the cake. Lol. Oh, how that word makes me cringe.

  • LOL at Belle. Moist. Moist moist moist.Am I the only one who gets migraines from red velvet cake?
She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • I might have had it a couple of times, and I don't remember loving it. I think it was dry now that I bust through my brain cobwebs.
  • It is just barely south of the Mason-Dixon line, which to this Yankee makes it the south. :-)

And it's south enough that they have red velvet cake. I love cake, but I can't bring myself to like it. Now, a big ole Southern coconut cake... that is a cake I can get friendly with.

I knew I loved you for a reason

  • Personally, I don't find it all that exciting because it's just chocolate cake with red food coloring.  HOWEVER!  We will be having it at Scarlett's first birthday party because a local cupcake place makes a "Miss Scarlett's Red Velvet" cupcake.

I do dig cream cheese frosting though, but I prefer it on orange dream cake.  yummy.

  • Oh, I love chocolate cake, German chocolate cake (there's that coconut again), carrot cake, plain old yellow cake with a really good frosting... it's no wonder I'm a big cow.

  • so really it is just the pretty pairing of chocolate cake and cream cheese frosting?

I do love cream cheese frosting. mmmmm. and I love coconut. I bet a coconut cream cheese frosting would be delicious. And I wouldnt even need any cake to go with it. Just a ladle.

  • ok, it's complicated, but not as spesh as I thought...hmmph.

    I still like it.

    because its cake.

  • It's the icing for me...plus the fact that it's just my thing with my grandma. I love her red velvet cake...not sure why, but I love it.
  • I really don't like any cake...

But a chocolate bourbon pecan pie......another matter altogether.

  • I'm from the South... And red velvet cake has always DISGUSTED me... It is the epitome of nasty to me!
  • I'm not a fan but this is Britt's favorite cake.  I bought a box mix once & it was god awful.  Its her birthday on Wed. so I thought I would surprise her with a good homemade red velvet cake.

Call me crazy but I don't think red velvet cake is chocolate with food coloring.  I think they use beet juice to make it red.  I'm googling right now....

You can use beet juice, but it doesn't produce that vivid red color. More of a dull brownish red.

Most of the recipes out there use about 1 oz of plain old red food coloring to achieve the color. I wouldn't really call it a 'chocolate cake', but there is cocoa powder in it.

    Anapolis - Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

(in any case I like red velvet cake)....

  • I love red velvet cake.  LOVE!  It was one of the wedding cake flavors we picked....our colors were red and shades of pink (blush/bashful/hotpink/whatever!) and the red velvet was PERFECT!  The grooms cake was german chocolate and that was gone before we got a piece (thank goodness one of the servers saved DH a piece!) and the red velvet was gone second and we were left with a  TON of white cake and strawberry cake.
  • I'd like to know too because i've only had it once and it tasted horrible. And my mom made it and there isn't one other baked good that she's ever made that tasted bad.

  • Bleh - I am not a fan at all.  I always wonder why they make a big deal of red velvet cupcakes on CupCake Wars.  I do, however, love cream cheese frosting.  It's me fav!
