One of DH's coworkers gave him some clothes for the baby, but they were girls clothes so we went to exchange them for boys clothes. She didn't give us the receipt, but they still had the tags and stickers on, they were the Target brand Circo so obviously from there. Well they treated us like we were criminals, wanted to scan my drivers license and lectured me about only being allowed to return $70 worth of merchandise per year without a receipt. We know their return policy sucks so we rarely by anything except cleaning supplies and perishables there, but I haven't returned anything in years and didn't expect to be treated like a criminal. DH looked at me as we walked away and said and that is why we are not registering here, even if they are cheaper than BRU.
I don't know what their registry return policy is if you don't have receipts, but people may want to make sure it isn't the $70/yr limit just in case people don't give you receipts.
Re: Target's return policy sucks!
Sorry she was rude to you. I really don't understand what has happened to most people in America. No one even says 'thank you' for holding the door open for them anymore.
You know you're not a criminal and that's all that matters. Hopefully you found some cute little boy clothes.

I don't think Target should be treating their paying customers like crap, is all. I don't think there should be a limit on what you can return, it's not like you have control over people giving you gift receipts. Target and other companies say they are doing this because of fraud, but to treat everyone like they are committing fraud because some people do is ridiculous. I also don't like them scanning my drivers license so I can make a return. Now all my personal info is stored in their database.
It was very ironic because I was watching an interview with one of our state representatives last night or Friday night where they were discussing that scanning drivers license for returns is a violation of privacy and consumers should be protected from it and then it happened to me today. Since CA just made it illegal for stores to ask for zip codes when you make a purchase I am hopeful that this representative will get to work on this too.

I hope not as well but I am expecting a hassle. The exact reason I refused to registry there for our wedding, the policy just sucks.

YD, I think you should call the store manager, tell them what happened and that this is why you have chosen not to register there.
FWIW, I have heard that even returning registry items can be difficult. The problem is that thieves have gotten quite clever (setting up registries, etc.) and Target seems to be taking a hard line on fighting back. They have no way of knowing if an item was purchased or stolen if you don't present a receipt. By collecting your information they can track people who are habitual and it may act as a deterrent, unfortunately for both bad actors and good customers.

The only reason I registered at Target is that they are the only store around here that carry the Graco pattern I want. I think I have about 20 items on there...the rest is all at BRU.
Kohl's treated us the same way when we returned some Christmas gifts this year. I've hated Kohl's for a long time anyway, but implying that we returned too many items within a year was just ridiculous.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
I have a friend that is registered at Target and I am going to make double sure I have a gift receipt for her and the original receipt saved for her just in case. There must be better ways to protect your bottom line without treating your honest customers like crap.

YES! They are AWFUL! We had a HUGE problem with our wedding registery returns. We received a set of towels that were a different color than we registered for and all we wanted to do was exhange them for the right color. The total price for the set was more than they allowed without a reciept, so they could exchange all but the washcloths and a couple hand towels. I wasn't asking for money back or anything, just and exchange. How ANNOYING! We had no problems with returns at the other place we registered - no questions asked.
Needless to say, we're not registering there and I tell all of my bride-to-be friends our story too. Target SUCKS!

My SIL works in Human Resouces at a local Target Store. I asked her about this adn she told me that of course it is "store policy" however some associates get a little crazy about it and forget about customer service.
I registered at Target and thankfully I didn't recieve any duplicates. I have only had to return 1 gift to Target (a Christmas gift for Hayden from my aunt) but thankfully she gave me a gift reciept so it wasn't a big deal for me.
Sucks that you had such a bad experience.
I told her that didn't make sense to me because they were never on our registry, but she insisted we had to do it. In the end, they just gave us store credit, which worked out fine.
I had heard from numerous people to not register at Target, but, unfortunately, our hometown doesn't have a BRU or anything similar, so we also registered at Target to make it easier on some of the shower guests.
FYI -- we wound up recieving a bunch of duplicate items from Target because our registry wouldn't update itself when items were purchased -- even when people had the registry scanned at checkout.
