Do they check for a heartbeat with ultrasound at the very first prenatal visit?? I will be about 8 weeks when I go in for my first appt. I would like to know because I'm wondering if the hubby should come.  I wouldn't have him come if its just routine bloodwork and stuff, but if we can hear the heartbeat for the first time he wouldn't want to miss! Thanks!

I was 6W4D and they did a vaginal ultrasound and we got to see the heartbeat.  Can't say for sure if your doctor will or not, but I am thinking there is a pretty good chance they will.

I'm not going in for my first appointment for another week, but I have the same question, my hubby really wants to be there if we get to hear/see the heartbeat.  I'm going to call my doctor's office and ask this week so he can plan whether or not to come

you typically can't hear it @ 8 weeks.

Call your doctor and ask - some only do one ultrasound at around 20 weeks, others do a confirmation ultrasound at your first visit along with others along the way. No matter what answers you read here it won't tell you the procedure at your office.

I have my first appt tomorrow and when I asked what would be covered I was told "just a lot of information."  Primarily family history and such.  I'm actually not even meeting with my doctor yet, it's a physician's asst I believe.  I will meet with my doctor "at next month's appointment" as I was told.

Just make a quick call and the receptionist should be able to tell you what your doctor's routine is.

With DS, we had a vaginal ultrasound around 7 or 8 weeks and we could hear the heartbeat. That was our first appointment.

I would call and ask.  With my 1st I did not have an U/S until 19w and with number 2 I had one at the end of my 5th week to date the pregnancy.  It all depends on the Dr.
