healing question

I'm a week post partum now, and still having a good deal of pain from a first degree tear with stitches, but pretty much only when i'm sitting down to pee. It feels like a knife going into that area...I think its just the stitches pulling maybe? How did the healing process go (timeline, did it get worse/change at all since birth) for those of you with tears?? It was an 'internal tear' per the midwife.

Also, i was given witches hazel and epifoam...i keep hearing about dermoplast and about tucks pads...are these different than what i have?? and can i get them over the counter?? i'm almost out of my epifoam and getting nervous to go without!

Re: healing question

  • My tear took about 2 weeks to heal. I dont feel any pain at this point, and I'm just about 3 weeks pp.

Tucks pads are the same as witch hazel pads, and Dermoplast is sold over the counter at the drug store. I hear you about not going without it...Dermoplast was my best friend!!  Are you using ice packs as well?

  • You can get dermoplast and tucks pads at the store. I had two internal stitches and by about 1.5 weeks pp I was able to stop using the epifoam. I never used the witch hazel.

  • I am two weeks pp and I still have some pain.  I have a epi and tore on top of bruising.  It feels much better than before, however, not completely healed.  I use witch hazel pads and dermoplast everyday.  They help tremendously.  I also soak in a warm tub each day at least once.  This keeps the stitches soft so they don't dry out and pull.
  • Definitely try out the Dermoplast. It's cheap and easy to get OTC.  I used it for at least 3 weeks with my last pregnancy and don't see any end in sight this time either.

  • try using the peri bottles (hopefully you brought at least one home from the hospital) and start squirting water a second or two before you begin to urinate, and keep it going until you are finished.  the water can help to cut down on the discomfort associated with the acidity of urine on your tear while it is healing.

And if it's because you feel like the stitches are pulling when you sit on the toilet, maybe just pee in the shower and then quickly rinse off?  I know it might seem gross, but it could be more comfortable to you while you're healing.
