Walkers

I?ve tried using the search feature to see if this topic had already been discussed but it clearly isn?t working (booooo to the bump)

Please recommend/bash your walker if your LO uses one...my MIL would like to purchase 2 for the twinkies and I just don?t know where to start. We?re already over run with bouncies, jumpers and toys?I just hate to add to the ciaos but hell if she wants to buy them ... WHATEV...it?s her money?my only concern is that we have carpet in their play area and didn?t know if it would be a waste if they can?t even roll..

TIA

Re: Walkers

  • I dont know why but my pedi said not to use walkers. I didnt ask since we dont have them anyway. But she asked if we put them in walkers and we said no and she replied good dont get them. Like I said I didnt really ask why since we dont have them but she asked while going over safety things with us.
  • I wouldn't get any unless you have hard floors they can use them on.  I know some people say/are told not to use them like PP b/c it "can delay" walking, I call BS on that personally.  DS1 started walking at 13.5m never used a walker, Jacob started walking at 13.5m using a walker often, and William started walking at 10m using a walker often.  J&W LOVED their walkers.  In our house, they were worth their weight in gold.  They would zip around our main level so fast and have the biggest smiles on their faces.  EVEN if it did delay walking a bit, does it really matter if they start walking at 14 or  15m opposed to 12 or 13 months?  If they're playing and really enjoying themselves, isn't that the best part?  I'm not trying to change anyone's mind if they're opposed to walkers, just saying that they're not the devil like some try to make them out to be (not directed at PP AT ALL, I've just seen that on other threads, not even necessarily on this board).  We had a Baby Trend walker (had bears on it from BRU) and another I got from our MoM club sale, don't know the brand.  Once our boys got their walkers, they had NO interest in exersaucers or jumpers, so you may be able to get them out of the way if you get walkers.  GL.

  • my PT and child development Dr both said no due to can encourage improper standing and walking development.  children try to walk on toes instead of on foot properly.

  • Ditto the other posters about what the pedi said about walkers.

One thing my one DD liked to do before she really started walking by herself was pushing behind a "push toy"--they have all kinds on the market. We have the playskool one that turns into a car that they can scoot along. They also had a baby stroller by FP that allowed her to do the same thing.

  • my boys used them and LOVED them.  they also walk more flat footed then a lot of babies i know that didnt use them. i could see the same warnings as on jumpers and such that they shouldnt be in there for hours on end though. the boys used them until they figured out how to get out of them (which was before they actually learned how to walk) but loved running around the house chasing each other and the dogs. i wouldnt get them if there was any stairs anywhere around that they could fall down, and carpets might make them not worth it too.

Our Parents As Teachers Educator (when DS1 was an infant) said not to use ANYTHING that they couldn't touch the floor with their heels (so don't use a jumperoo or exersaucer if their heels couldn't touch the floor).  Good note about the crawling out, Jacob learned how to get out of his and we caught him at the bottom of the stairs of our main level (where we kept the walkers so they couldn't fall down the stairs) out of it and climbing up the stairs 2x.  The first time I thought it was just a fluke, the 2nd time he did it so quick, we knew he'd actually figured it out.  We never bothered with closing the gate at the steps when they were in walkers b/c we figured they were trapped, not so.

  • THANKS LADIES!!! we'll just use the money on a more useful toysWink
