TOPAMAX WARNING

Hi Ladies, The FDA just announced that the anti-seizure drug Topamax and its generics carry an increased risk of cleft lips/palates.

Topamax has many off-label uses including mood stablization and migraines. I was on this medication up until 2 years ago. My then-doctor told me I couldn't take it when I was pregnant but now the FDA says its even more dangerous than first thought. I was taking it when I had my first miscarriage (unplanned pregnancy) Maybe there was a link?

I'm not too worried about it at this point but I'm going to tell my doctor about this just to be on the safe side.

Just wanted to give you a heads up in case you or someone you know is taking it.

Re: TOPAMAX WARNING

  • I didn't realize this was new news.  I got of it the first time two years ago in preparation for TTC # 1.  I took it again for a short time in between pregnancies but weaned off again.  I was not willing to risk the associated birth defects.

  • Many anti-seizures have risks for clef palates. I am on lamictal, which is one of the safest anit-seizure meds, but there is still a slight risk. Over 90% of women with epilepsy have healthy babies with no defects. As an epileptic, I have to take medicine and with my doctor's guidance felt like I was willing to take the risk. You come to a point where you rely on blind faith and focus on the positives instead of the "what ifs", otherwise you will drive yourself crazy. Just because I am epileptic doesn't mean I should be deprived of having a child. Talk to your doctor and put it in God's hands...
  • While the drug has never been considered safe, the "new" part is the FDA issuing a stronger warning today.

  • I have heard terrible things about this drug.. it causes blindness as a side effect and yes many birth defects..
