11 weeks Appt Question

So I was lucky to have my first appt with my doctor right when I found out. He told me to come back in 5 weeks, which I figured would be my first ultra sound. I know many people on this board are American, and I think it Canada we do it a bit different - but after speaking with a friend she said that I won't go to the doctor's office to get the Ultra sound - I will be going to the hospital. My heart sank because now my 5 week countdown has turned into a 6 or 7 week countdown. If my doctor is not going to do an u/s when I see him next, what the heck is he going to do? Paperwork? All I want is to hear or see a heart beat sooo badly!!!

I think I am going to call my doctors office and ask - I hate bugging them, but I really want to know what exactly my next appt is for!

Re: 11 weeks Appt Question

  • Even it you don't get an u/s at your first appt they will probably listen for a heartbeat using a doppler so you should at least be able to hear the heartbeat. Some people only get one u/s and that isn't until their 20 week growth appt!

    Good Luck!

  • I would think that at your 11 week appointment you will be able to hear the heartbeat on the doppler. So you should be able hear your baby's heartbeat at that appointment, you just won't be able to see him/her.

  • I know how you feel.  Im in Canada the problem is I dont have an ob and went to a walk in clinic in hopes that he would refer me to a doctor in the area.  But I am almost 11 weeks and I havent had an ultrasound or heard my babies heart yet.  I hate the wait so bad.  I have the IPS scan in 11 days...I hate waiting.
  • I live in the US but have an 11 wk appointment next week.  They did an U/S at 6 wks to age the pregnancy because I was irregular, so I got to see the heartbeat then.  Now, no U/S until 20-22 wks with my doc, but we're doing the Sequential Screening in 2 wks so I'll have an U/S with that.  There's lots of personal reasons why you may or may not choose to have the screening, and for us seeing the baby on U/S was just an added benefit, not the reason for doing it.  But I am so excited to see the baby - 20-22 wks was just so long to wait!  So I feel your pain!
