3rd Trimester

Did you wash your diaper bag?

I've got a Vera Bradley Baby Bag, so it's cotton on the outside and it's got vinyl or whatever inside. Just wondering if people normally wash their bags before cramming them full of baby gear? I think I've washed just about everything else at this point...

  • I really hadn't thought about it until I read this... I think maybe now I will just run an anti bacterial wipe over the inside. :)

  • Nah.

  • Obviously its not a big deal, but I did. I just thought of the baby chewing on things that were in it and his skin. It was a real pain to get it to dry though.

  • No. It's going to be a long time before a baby is old enough to chew on a diaper bag (and I don't think my kid ever did ...). I admit this question has me scratching my head -- it's not like the baby is going to sleep in the diaper bag.

I am not a germaphobe, though.

  • I didn't.  I don't know why a kid would chew on a diaper bag and I'll be honest, my 2 yo certainly put a lot worse things in his mouth.

I'm also in the "germs are good" camp though.

This.  I still use mine with DD so I spot clean it every once in a while, but only because it gets stains here and there, not because of any germ issue or the baby touching it (which mine never has)...it was expensive so the last thing I am letting my kids do is chew on it.

  • I'll probably wipe it down with a couple of damp paper towels before I put baby gear inside.

I think she meant that the baby will be chewing on things that are kept in the bag and not the actual bag itself.  Either way...I hadn't thought of doing this myself.  I don't think I will wash mine but maybe wipe it down a bit.  I haven't washed anything at this point but will soon.  My sister-n-law who is due any day now didn't wash anything but the bedding.
  • I definitely didn't bother washing it before I used it at first, but I'm using the same diaper bag I've had for 5 years so I washed it this time. It was mostly for aesthetics though because I noticed it had a spill/stain of some kind in it that I didn't know was there before. It had nothing to do with it being clean or not.

Generally you wash baby clothes before using them because the fabric is treated and it could irritate the baby's skin, and wash/boil things like pacifiers and bottles because they have that film on them from being manufactured so it's to sterilize them - I'm pretty sure your baby isn't going to be wearing your diaper bag so you don't have to worry about irritating their skin.

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.

FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.
  • Not before using it, but I do wash my bags every now and then after they have been used.  I'm bad about putting them down on the floor in public places, so I know the bottom of my bag is germ city.

  • NO....I have drawn the line with clothes and blankets.

I think the media has us all so uptight about germs and stuff.....

My cousin was so uptight about this stuff and her kids are sick ALL the time
