Special Needs

Vent-ish, Speech & What Others THINK She Says

My gramma watches Peyton (when I worked) and now when I have Dr. Appts, Need to keep my sanity, etc.

The OT has gone there a couple of times when i've had to work or had peri appointments on those days.

Well, she's like don't forget to tell the therapist about all of her new words.

SHE DOESNT HAVE ANY.

They swear she is saying "mine mine mine" and "cup" and "Wyatt-my cousin's name" and "nicole-my cousin she's seen twice's name" and other random crap.  They think she says "sh!t"  That's the only one i've kind of heard her say lol.

But the others are total jibberish & if she is saying something that sounds like them, (which I don't feel she is) it's not consistent and she has no idea of the meaning.

The mine mine mine is really mom mom mom which she's always said she's just spacing it otu more than she used too, "mummumumum."

They take anything she does happen to babble and turn it into words.

She really honestly isnt' talking.  She is starting to babble more (instead of being almost completely non verbal)  but nothing is real words.

Re: Vent-ish, Speech & What Others THINK She Says

  • My DD does the same thing.  She will be 3 in April and she is actually being evaled on Wed. for speech therapy.  My inlaws are always like she said, she said.  I am thinking no she didn't.  But I almost spit my coke on the screen when I read the sh!t part.  I hear that out of my DD mouth all the time.  Bahahahahaha

I would just smile and say great and continue to roll eyesConfused.  What is it going to hurt if they think she is talking.  Just expain to the therapist you have never heard those words.

     Good luck to you

  • My MIL always has these AMAZING stories about things DD does when she watches her.  The first couple times I got excited - "Oh really?  She said Mommy?!?" (this being when DD was something like 9 months old and nowhere NEAR saying Mommy with meaning).  Then I came to terms with the fact that this is a rose-colored glasses kind of lady and I just take anything she says with a grain of salt.  I hate having to be the most skeptical person in the room when it comes to my DD's abilities, but it's the only way I can effectively assess her needs and be sure we're meeting them.

Sucks when you can't just celebrate the "new words" though, doesn't it?

  • My MIL does this too!  DS did not say a real word until 17 months.  But starting at about 10 months, she found alllll kinds of things he could say.  One day (at about 10m) she came up with about 5 words he was using.  It made me grind my teeth.  So incredibly obnoxious, and made worse by "Well I KNOW you don't believe me but I really do hear it!" or her telling other people.  She was convinced that she taught him "delicious."  Right.  Now she'll tell me how he used 3 words together.  Sorry, he's not doing that yet.  He has 2 in rare occasions.  But she's just sure of it.

He had a few jargon words that he used for a variety of meanings/situations, and she was constantly trying to "decode" them and decide what they meant and how they could be traced back to real words.  If I didn't have a degree in this I can only imagine that she would be 1000 times worse, but she can't really argue that much with me!

So irritating, especially when you're waiting and working for REAL speech, but such a grandma thing to do.

  • Ok Atleast I'm not the only one lol.

I was starting to just wondering if it was my family.  Dh's family is a whole other story when it comes to Peyton's issues.

We did get signed up for speech therapy, i'm just waiting on the dr. to send EI a script.  I told them I was fine with 1x a month now (esp with the new baby) and then if by 18 months she hasn't started making a significant change in her ability I want to bump it up.  We have an outpatient eval as well scheduled for May.

We did get released from OT (it was pretty much worthless anyway) and will just be doing outpatient PT.

    Thanks for sharing your experiences!

It's actually really good for Grandma to think of the babbling as sincere interactions.  If there is a language delay, then providing positive reactions to her babbling and communication attempts will not hurt her.  Sure, it may not be true words, but it sets the groundwork for positive verbal interactions when she does get stable words.  I can see how it bugs you when they aren't consistent words tho.  Feel free to have her write down a list of DD's "new words" for the therapist. You can pass it on or not.
