Baby Names

Narcissa

Now I'm a HUGE Harry Potter nerd and in no way am going to name my child Narcissa. But I can't help but LOVE the name and if I really had it my way, I would totally name my child that, go by Cissy for short. Everyone I have told that to HATES it, which it's definitely a DIFFERENT name and I also understand the narcissism point.

I'm just curious as to how many people, IF anyone, likes the name like I do.

Don't forget, I'm not planning on naming my child this. This is out of sheer curiosity.

Re: Narcissa

  • Not a fan, I'd rather name her Daffodil.

  • When I hear Narcissa, I think Malfoy. I guess I am a Harry Potter nut. I think Cissy is cute, but Narcissa is just not really my style.

  • I know someone who named his daughter this. I never made the connection till now. :)

  • Hate it, just because of the connotation of narcissism.

But I think it would make an awesome, awesome name for a pet.

And I think it makes a fabulous evil alter-ego name, for Halloween, make-believe, etc.

This. I wasn't aware of the Harry Potter association.

  • Narcissa = Narcissism. HmmNo Google the Greek mythology about Narcissus. It`s considered rude to give someone narcissism flowers, because it means that you think that they were narcissistic. I would not be able to get past the negative meaning behind it.

  • I have never read a Harry Potter book or seen the movie(s) so I wouldn't have known who Narcissa was. If I saw this name I'd def associate it with narcissism and the nn Cissy, I'd associate with "sissy" which is a derogatory name for a gay male....thumbs down all around.

  • Yeah, it was definitely not meant to be a flattering name in the book - it's not just a coincidence that it is evocative of "narcissism." For that reason alone, I would never consider the name for a child.

That being said, I just plain dislike it as a name, even without the negative connotation.  The "Nar" is very hard sounding.

  • When I first saw the thread I immediately though Harry Potter Lol. Don't like the name, it's nms - but I love Harry Potter !

  • I love it too!  For the same reason!  HP is the best!!!

Also, Cissy is a cute nickname for a 2nd sib.

Like PP, I could never use it with the narcissism connection.

JKR's name choices are great - Bellatrix (Belladonna Plant - AKA deadly nightshade).  So clever!

My husband and I LOVE Harry Potter too- if we have a girl he really wants her name to be Hermione (although I refuse!).  Also with Narcissa, I think of Narc- like narcotics, and also the narcissism.  Maybe you could go with Fleur?
  • I think the name sounds beautiful, but I totally understand the negative connotations behind it. I thought of Harry Potter when I seen this thread too! My love for those books has caused me to keep the name Hermione off my baby name list, although I think I may throw it back on for baby #2 or 3.

Also, I came across the name Hedwig in my baby name book, it means "great suffering during war", talk about foreshadowing.

  • I thought of HP right away because I am also a nerd. I like the name, but I would probably avoid using it on a kid. We named our dog Ginny after HP. I am all about naming pets after HP! Smile
