Do you feed your child(ren) soup?

I was reading a post on one of the national boards about feeding kids soup.  The majority of people said they only feed their kids homemade soup.  Am I missing something?  I know soup is high in sodium but if you get reduced sodium canned soup (Progresso) it doesn't seem to be as bad.  Is feeding your child(ren) canned soup a big no no that I don't know about?

Re: Do you feed your child(ren) soup?

  • Leah loves soup and I let her get it whenever I can because it generally contains a nice amount of hidden vegetables that she won't eat alone (i.e., broccoli soup). When I can make it homemade, I do (like tonight I made baked potato soup which was really easy), but I am definitely not above feeding her soup from a can when we're just having lunch or we're in a hurry. I try to buy the healthiest-looking soup I can find, generally-- low-sodium, etc.

One alternative that is easy is to make homemade chicken broth (which is very easy and low-sodium naturally) and freeze it to keep on hand. Then, when you make soup, just cut up some carrots, celery, and cooked chicken, and then add egg noodles to it when it's boiling to make chicken noodle soup. It make a lot and you can always turn around and then save those extras.

  • I do fairly often, it's our 'go-to' in a hurry lunch... I get some organic brand, low sodium... Henry loves vegetable and also the chicken noodle because it has giant carrot pieces in it.

I figure between the low sodium and draining off a lot of the liquid it's really not a big deal.  (I only drain off most of the liquid for ease of eating, not because I think it's bad.  Henry likes to feed himself and gets mad if all he gets in a bite is broth :)

  • E eats it mostly when we eat out.  It started out that he'd order something kid friendly (and therefore not healthy) and then eat my soup instead... so we started ordering soup for him.  Tonight we went to O'Charleys and he had soup and shrimp.

  • Our pedi suggested buying canned soup to try and get fin to eat the veggies. So I wouldn't think there's anything wrong with it. I typically avoid soup just because he can't feed himself with a spoon yet :)

  • Glad to know I'm not missing anything.  I drain the liquid too because the boys don't know how to eat with a spoon and Nolan goes ape sh!t if I try to feed him.  Independence - it's what we encourage and then then it comes back to bite us in the arse :)

  • I think some ppl are worried about possible BPA in the lining of canned goods. I am not 100% sure about that though so don't quote me on it.

I feed DD soup all the time. She LOVES it. I get her to eat spinach, cabbage, kale, all sorts of veggies that way. YUM!
