My gym is starting Zumba classes tomorrow, and I am really curious about it. So... Why do you love it? What is so special about Zumba. Can anyone do it, regardless of fitness level? I hate traditional aerobics classes, why is Zumba so much better?

Re: Talk to me about Zumba...
Zumba is fun, and it's more about the music. It's not like a traditional aerobics class, but I will say it differs per instructor. I've been to a few classes, and the first one I went to was harder, so I sweated more and was really sore the next day. But the one I did a few weeks ago wasn't that hard, and I was kind of disappointed. Zumba offers different types of classes though, the one for all, toning, and a few others. It's an hour class, so you do burn a good amount of calories.
Katia is going to know more though since she actually is an instructor, so she could shed some light on it!
I take at the Y. It reminds me of aerobics in high school. I'm old, so that would be aerobics ~ late 80s ~ early 90s. The music is fast, there are more choreographed moves and some style. At the Y, some instructors have more samba-salsa songs... but, most of them seem just like faster high-energy songs. It's super popular. They fill the gym with 100-140 people.
Advice: If you have shoes with a smooth sole, that is best. If you wear running shoes or some kind of cross trainer with grip, it is going to be hard on your knees. Nike, Ryka, Capezio and others make shoes for zumba and dance classes.
More advice: Shake it, shake it

and oh hell anyone can do it. We leave drenched with sweat...
OMG she's amazing. That looks like a lot of fun, and there are a ton of ladies all at different levels. My abs would be ripped in no time with those moves!

Zumba..... You will either hate it or love it! And like everyone else says it totally depends on the instructor.
Zumba is a latin inspired dance party/work out with a twist of some hip hop! That is exactly what it is like. I fell in love with it because I saw people having fun while burning calories (lots may I add). It is for any fitness level and you can make it your own work out. Add jumps where there is taps, lift arms to the beat etc . You will leave very sweaty, singing to the music and quickly become an addict. No for reals it is kind of funny. Some take it overboard! I call them....... Zumba groupies! They are at every class, early to attack people to get the front row and have more Zumba clothing than the founders himself. It is a lot of cardio (I add more core strength to mine). Your feet will be sore the first couple of days. The thing that I would say it actually to wear a worn down pair of workout shoes or you could wear dance shoes. I say this because there is a lot of twisting and it takes pressure of the knees.
Have fun, sing along and sweat your a** off!
And just for fun I really wanted to add a link in here to stir up some drama!
If you ever want to come down, you can do a drop in... or buy a punch card 10 classes for 25 bucks. i signed up for 2 years of indentured servitude with them. but its 20 bucks a month. unlimited classes... and they are the NICEST people EVER... I ache all the time
honestly, being there, watching them is inspiring, if not embarrassing. I would never move like that, even in fron of my husband. Body roll?? pop it? oh my... but man it makes me happy!!
you should see their fb page... they have before and afters... inspiration.
Oh and K-- my dr told to me EAT MORE. WTF! she said Im starving myself. ooops.
Oh Beth your a rebel! Posting a link..... Kidding!
And they are so right it is a workout with out feeling like working out!
As long as you have a good instructor Zumba can be super fun. I've had both good and bad ones and stopped going after the awesome one was replaced. It actually seems like something you'd love!
I thought so! Can you send me the link to their FB page on FB. I don't want you to get banned!
