Have you ever used peapod.com?

What do you think?  Are they more expensive?  Reasonable?

Getting to the grocery store has proven to be a hassle lately - just curious if the home delivery is worth it.

Re: Have you ever used peapod.com?

  • Just start lurking on this board - We used peapod when we lived in NY.  It was great since we needed the convenience and I thought the delivery prices were reasonable considering how much time they saved me.  As far as items and their prices, I think it varies by region but I could be wrong about that.  We lived in a suburb 25 minutes north of midtown Manhattan, so groceries were expensive across the board.  I recommend ordering once through them to see how big of a difference the prices are vs going to the store yourself.

  • I have used them and love them. My only complaint is they don't have as much variety and certain brands that I like. It's getting better though and the produce is fabulous!

  • We have used Peapod before, and it was a mix. It was more expensive (comparing their prices to the ones in the actual store- in my case was Giant), but the convenience was so nice and it kept us from buying anything we didn't need. At the time we found the benefit to outweigh the higher cost.  I now shop online at a different local grocery store which allows you to pick up your groceries and pay at the car, with much lower prices than peapod.
  • I haven't used them in years but I used to use them a lot when I was on bedrest and stuff.  It was very convenient.  It was about the same for the price of the items but then you have the delivery fee.  Totally worth it in my opinion though, they also always used to drop off coupons and stuff.  For me, it's not something I would use all of the time (just not worth it) but definitely is great when needed.
  • I've used them on occasion lately.  When my ds was an infant I used it every week because I couldn't take him out for the first couple months.  I think the prices were the same as in the store, but then you have to add on the delivery price.  If it is inconvient for you to get to the store, then I think the delivery charge can be worth it.

Sometimes I am not happy with the quality.  This has only happened a couple times...like my deli cheese was sliced thick when I ordered thin.  It is a little tough if you want specific brands because they don't have everything on the website that they do in the store.  I used another local supermarket that does teh same thing as peapod and they were great about if you request an item.  Not sure how quick Peapod puts something on the website once you request it.

If you do start, look for coupond online.  there are always discounts on delivery charges for first time users.

  • I haven't, but I know plenty of people who have, and they rave about it.  I thought the prices were the same as in the store?  The people I talked to said it was easier to compare prices for different brands than in the store, and you can use coupons just like in the store.

Check for coupons.  I know I have seen several coupons in the mail offering a discount for first time users.

  • I did see that the prices of individual items were higher, but maybe that is just my area? Also, when we did it, the first 60 days had no delivery charge, after that the charge kicked in. So I think it is definitely worth it for the free delivery!
  • I use it weekly. At least for my store its not anymore expensive than whats in the store. Even with sales, if its on sale in the store the online price is the same. I like that i can add things in as i remember and your cart saves it all. Plus i buy less since i only buy what i need. No impulse buying.

And also, i've noticed produce is much fresher than when you get it in the store. Since they take it right from the back, its all the freshest stuff that has just arrived. Its stuff that hasn't been sitting on the shelves for a few days. Same goes with meat, i've never had a problem with something being close to the expiration date.
