Scream from DTaP - have you heard of this?

I posted earlier about DD being hysterical.  She's currently asleep thanks to Tylenol, but of course I started googling and found this - https://www.mothering.com/community/forum/thread/618983/what-causes-the-dtap-scream

Have any of you heard about this?  Now I'm freaked out that she is having a reaction (other than just pain in her legs) to the vaccine.

  • I think you should stay on top of the tylenol and see how she does. If you honestly think something is wrong, then trust your gut and call the pedi, but if she seems to be doing fine then don't freak yourself out!

Izz screamed for a good while yesterday but when I finally decided to take her in, she had calmed down and was smiling so I figured the ER docs would look at me like a nutcase for bringing in an otherwise happy baby.

  • I wouldn't take too much stock in that forum. I subscribe to Mothering mag and it's a place for those who are non-vaxing and very "green" and it's very conspiracy theorist even for me, I would take all of it with a grain of salt.

I agree with Mrs Fv20, call your pedi/nurse line if you're concerned but I don't think this warrants a trip to the ER unless her leg swells or fever goes up. Try a bath, car ride, going outside, just something to shock her.

  • That forum is the most lunatic fringe thing I've ever seen. ::backs away slowly from computer:: I'd talk to your pedi, but babies are often fussy after vaccinations. Mine always is, but she's better after some tylenol and a night of rest.

    GL!

Totally agree.  The crying is probably just due to a sore leg.  If you are really concerned, call your pedi.

  • Yeah... that forum is ridiculous.  And would you rather listen to your child with whooping cough all night instead?
  • Yeah i read that forum and freaked out. Brain swelling, wtf? B had his shots yesterday and today was mr crabby. I just associate this with the soreness that even i get after the flushot. That post had me going for a sec though!

1ht due to the baby passed out on my shoulder who wont let me put him down.

No, I wasn't trying to advocate no-vaccines, just seeing if anyone had heard of that reaction to DTaP before.  Her scream was just unlike anything I have heard from her (and she is a fussy baby - I've heard a lot of screams), so it scared me.  She had HepB already and the sensitivity in her leg was NOTHING.  I'm dreading when she wakes up again - I can give her Tylenol again at 10 and I'm just praying I can get it in her poor little body before she fully wakes up.  I can't handle listening to that scream and seeing her get so hysterical again...

  • How is she doing? Any better?

FWIW, she might have a local sensitivity to the shot that she didn't have to Hep B. My baby got a rash from one of them -- I can't even remember now. But it was just a rash -- it went away.

The screams are incredible, and sometimes they are not necessarily indicative of the severity of the problem, only the severity or acuteness of the pain. Like my baby can break glass with her screams when she's getting teeth -- obviously a very very painful occurrence, but not something that will permanently damage her.

Still, if you can get peace of mind from talking to your pedi or night nurse, I would absolutely do that. I called mine in the middle of the night a few weeks ago when she fell and bumped her head. Was it maybe over the top? Sure, but I'm all about the "better safe than sorry."

(Which is the same reason I vaccinate. You should have seen the pedi when I asked how SOON my baby could get her full course of vax. But srsly? We had a measles scare here in DC this week. MEASLES. Load her up, I say. The sooner, the better.)

I hope your LO is doing better soon!

Thanks so much for asking. She seems to be a bit better. She was asleep in hercswing so when it was time for Tylenol I turned it off to see how she would react. She stirred a bit and opened her eyes without screaming. Yay! I told DH to get the Tylenol ready while I changed her and gave her that, then immediately put her on to nurse. She's still nursing and seems to be doing ok , although really lethargic, but I guess that's to be expected. I think I might not sleep much tonight bc I'm so worried about her!
