My SO and I have been discussing baby names for awhile, and he brings nothing to the table (except for his contribution of Jo'Jo for a girl . . . as in the Beatles song "Get Back" . . . seriously). So, I'd like to ask you ladies for your scathingly honest advice because I know I'll get it. Disclaimer: My name is Dakota, and I have no interest in naming a baby something "typical". I want a some-what unique name that sounds "nice". But please tell me if any or all of these names are trash, or if any of them have merit. I still have six months to come up with something decent.
Boy:
Tristan
Marlowe
Sasha
Hudson
Girl:
Tristan(ne) . . . dunno about feminizing the spelling or using a traditional male name
Rosalind
Sierra
Shenandoah
Genevieve
Paris
Re: Honest advice--need opinions
Boy: Sasha
Girl: Rosalind or Genevieve.
Shenandoah is pretty (I love the movie, btw) but I would hate to have to spell out that really long name on daily basis.
IMO, if you do go with Tristan for a girl don't try to "feminize" the name by misspelling it. Own it and go with Tristan.
THIS, except I like Tristan the most from your boys.
Love Tristan and Hudson
Like Sasha (Reminds me of a little Russian boy)
No Marlowe I dont like the spelling, Marlo is better to my eye.
I don't like Tristan on a girl and would dislike it even more "femenized"
I LOVE Rosalind and Genevive :-)
I like Sierra
dislike Shenandoah and Paris.

^^All of this, except Hudson would be my first choice for a boy name.
Tristan- So/so
Marlowe- Love it
Sasha- Please, no
Hudson - Love, but some have issues with it, esp those from the Detroit Metro Area.
Girl:
Tristan(ne) - I like it less as a girl's name
Rosalind- Love
Sierra- Love. I prefer it with a "C" because "S" reminds me of the soda.
Shenandoah- I don't like, mainly because I babysat a girl with this name and her nn was "Doa"... D-O-A... not good!
Genevieve - love
Paris - brings images of Paris Hilton or Paris from Gilmore Girls to mind...
ETA: I say "please, no" to Sasha just because I've known a few female Sasha's and have not liked one of them! Sorry my personal feelings took over. That being said, I can't picture on a boy.

BLOG.
Boy:
Tristan - Not a fan.
Marlowe - the only Marlo I know is a girl. Not that it screams feminine, but it's too nondescript for my taste.
Sasha - As a NN for Aleksander absolutely. Again, it's too nondescript for me.
Hudson - My favorite boy name on your list.
Girl:
Tristan(ne) . . . dunno about feminizing the spelling or using a traditional male name - TOSS this name from your girls' list altogether.
Rosalind - LOVE
Sierra - Meh, it's a mtn range and that makes me think of breasts and the possibility of teasing.
Shenandoah - is a band, a great country band. It just doesn't have the feel of a NAME to me.
Genevieve - LOVE
Paris - cannot get over the Hilton association, she has forever ruined this name for me. What about Carys? Same sound, but with a twist! And, different!
Tristan - nice name. A bit too trendy for me, but I like it
Marlowe - hate it.
Sasha - difficult to pull off for a boy (like Leslie or Marion)
Hudson - Pretentious
Girl:
Tristan(ne) - PLEASE NO!
Rosalind - Somewhat old fashioned, but I like it.
Sierra - Very late 1990's
Shenandoah- Please don't do this to your child.
Genevieve - Kinda flowery, but a nice name
Paris - see Shenandoah
I'm kind of "eh" on all your boys' names.
Tristan - don't like it. I think it's too feminine for a boys' name, and too masculine for a girl.
Marlowe - This name could seriously grow on me, but my first thought was of the girls' name Harlow.
Sasha - I like this name for either sex, honestly, but it's definitely more popular in the U.S. for girls. That aside, I think I like it best as a nickname for Alexander if you want to use it for a boy.
Hudson - Eh. Not great, not bad. Sort of trendy with the -son ending, but I do like the sound of the name.
I'm all over the place with your girls' names:
Tristan - see above. (And if you do use it on a girl, don't misspell it)
Rosalind - I love this Shakespeare name. Do it. For real.
Sierra - Eh, NMS. Kind of cheesy to me.
Shenadoah - I almost like this name. Almost. It might just be a little too out there (and is kind of theme-y with your name). Nevertheless it is kind of pretty, even though I don't think you can actually name a person this. Have you considered Shoshannah?
Genevieve - I love this name. Seriously. It's gorgeous, and I love all the nickname possibilities.
Paris - No. I'm sorry. It's been ruined. I wish Paris Hilton didn't have this much influence, but she's pretty much wrecked an otherwise lovely place name.
My friend's DD is named Jordan. We used to call her JoJo as one of her nns.
Also as for Sasha, I agree with pp about using it as a nn for Alexander or Aleksander.
What about Josephine, if its a girl of course....JoJo could be her nickname?
Boy:: Tristan
Girl: Genevieve
Sasha sounds VERY feminine to me and Paris only makes me think of Hilton. Sierra makes me think of Sierra Mist. Marlowe and Shenandoah don't sound like people names to me.
I am prone to Hudson but I am biased. I have to say though that we get stopped a lot because people seem to LOVE the name! So that's my vote. Second choice would be: Tristan.
The girls names are NMS. But Marlowe was on my list for a girls name! So that would be my pick for a girl!
Tristan(ne) - NO, please noRosalind - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!Sierra - MehShenandoah - I'm not sure what's going on here...Genevieve - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!Paris - Like that lazy-eyed, entitled slut? or the city? Either way I think the name is kind of "poser"You have some good options here and a wide range of styles. It will be fun to see what you chose! Good Luck.
I like Hudson and Rosalind.
The rest are NMSAA.
Thanks for the advice so far, ladies. Sasha, Paris, Sierra, and Tristan(ne) are officially out. Geez, I wasn't even thinking about Paris Hilton--I vaguely remembered that Michael Jackson had named his daughter Paris, but that was all that came to mind. (Honestly, I just liked that I could indulge my literary nerd--"The Iliad"---with a place name . . . guess it was not meant to be lol.)
I'm still very attached to Marlowe and Shenandoah, but I know there's a lot of disapproval for Shenandoah, especially. I'll try to think of "real" names that sound like it or have that same kind of feel . . . eh. (alliejo725, I really like your suggestion of Shoshannah.)
Thanks for the geographical lists feffy11! And if I have more children, I feel no obligation to name them after places. I'm doing this on a baby-by-baby basis--no need to add pressure or create entire family themes, here lol (unless it just works out that way--ya never know).
Again, thank you soo much for the advice so far. Jordan, Josephine, Shoshannah--I really like these names and will be adding them to my list
You can still indulge your Literary Nerd.
Troy (Place and Literary)
I would prefer Marlowe as a girl's name.
