VBAC/c-section update

I had another appointment today with a different Dr.  I got pretty much the same lecture..."big" baby with #1, most likely another "big" baby = another failed attempt at a vaginal delivery.  So even though I'm feeling very frustrated by their sudden negativity towards my attempting a VBAC, I feel like I did leave with a more concrete plan.

Right now I have a growth u/s scheduled for 38 weeks.  I know not to completely trust those, but at least it will give us a ballpark idea of his size.  Dr. said if I get to 40 weeks and nothing is happening at all with my cervix, we'll move right to the c-section (they won't induce me) and I'm fine with that.  If I get to 40 weeks and there's at least something happening (2-3cm's) they'll give me a few more days to hopefully go into labor on my own.  So hopefully I'll just go into labor on my own in the very near future!  I have been having some contractions, but they didn't check me today, so I have no idea if they're doing anything yet.

I also had my platelet levels checked today, won't know the results until next week though.  If they're too low (below 100) I most likely won't be able to have an epidural and if a c-section is needed I'd be put under completely.  To me, that's all the more reason to attempt the VBAC, I can't imagine agreeing to a c-section at 39 for no medical reason and missing out on being awake for his birth.  Although going natural doesn't sound that fun either :)

Re: VBAC/c-section update

  • I so hope it works for you!! I will be attempting a VBAC as well... How big was your son? DS was 9lb 9oz.. I had a c-section because he was transverse, my water had broken to start labor and I was at the end of 24 hrs and getting an infection. My OB said that its not so much weight..but head size... And though DS was a "big baby" he had a small head which makes it more favorable. Can you ask your Dr about that?
Even if you can't have an epidural would you be able to use other drugs? Nubane??? I'll keep my fingers crossed...please keep us updated!!

  • DS was 8lbs 5oz, so not even really that huge.  I was induced, pushed for over 2 hours and couldn't get him out.  The Dr. thought he was face up, but couldn't tell for sure....so I had the c-section.  That's basically the reason they're implying that I may fail, that since I pushed and it didn't work that it's likely to happen again.  I'm completely ok with the fact that I may try and fail, I just feel like they're trying to convince me not to try at all.

As far as I know, other drugs are an option.  The epidural still may be an option, it all just depends on what my levels are when I go into labor, this weeks results will just let us know where we stand now.  They were 99 when I had DS and they let me get the epidural, so we just have to wait and see with that.

  • I've been thinking about you, klmorgan! I'm glad you have a plan in place, and good job sticking to your guns about wanting to attempt the VBAC. I am totally with you! I hope your platelet counts come back fine and that you go into labor on your own!

I'll be 35 wks. tomorrow, and doc is prob. going to schedule an u/s for 37-38 wks. to check baby girl's position. (Could still be breech! Sad) They won't induce me either with a VBAC, so I'm praying she's turned already or will turn in the future, and that my goal of a VBAC is possible to attempt!  Keep us updated. Not too much longer... ahh!
