Waking babies?

My twins are almost 8 weeks old... Do you wake your babies throughout the day for feedings or let them wake on their own when they are hungry?  They are both healthy and gaining plenty of weight.

Re: Waking babies?

  • I don't wake my babies.  I let them sleep and wake when they are hungry. Duncan will go for about 2-3 hours b/w feedings and Tucker has gone as long as 4-5 hours.  I know that some MoMs do wake them every 2-3 hours though.  What we do works for us so far.  I am hoping that Dunca will begin sleeping for longer stretches at night though so I may start waking him up to make sure he is getting plenty of calories during the day.

  • At 2 months old, if one baby was eating, the other one was as well - no questions asked. I was (and am still) not about to be feeding babies all.day.long. Fortunately for us it rarely involved waking someone from a nap, but in the early days yes - if someone woke in the middle of the night to eat then the other one was woken up and fed as well. There were plenty of nights when I'd try and just feed the one that woke only to get back in bed and the other one woke. The less sleep deprivation the better!

  • I kept the girls on an every 3 hour eating schedule during the day and if one was eating, I woke the other to feed (at nite too) the first 2-3 months ...
  • We're on a 3.5 hour schedule, so yes, we still wake to eat at 16 weeks old.  I foresee that happening for a long time, because I don't want to be feeding babies all day long.  They have been STTN, but, when they weren't, when one woke, both ate.
