Trouble TTC

Follicle Size

Does anyone know if there are any issues if your follicles grow too large?  I am on my 4th round of clomid and at each u/s my follicles are measuring just under 20mm but I dont end up ovulating for 3 to 5 days after the u/s.  In November on cd 15 I had a 31mm follicle at my u/s and didnt ovulate until 3 days after the scan.

I am also getting my progesterone levels check on 7 DPO and they have all been anywhere from 30-60 range which confirms ovulation.

My doctor has not mentioned anything about follicle size other than ovulation normally occurs around 20-25mm.  When I asked them about my concern they didnt think it was a big deal.

Has anyone had experience with this or heard of what happens when the follicles grow so big?

Thanks!

Re: Follicle Size

  • Yes...I have the same problem!!  When I go for my u/s my follicles have measured anywhere between 19-25mm (this is with clomid as well...), and based on them growing 1-2mm per day they're between 28-31mm when I ovulate.  I would love to hear if anyone else has info on this topic, my doc also doesn't seem to be confirmed, although he also says that you should ovulate by the time they'e 24mm. - Although from googling I've seen some reports say that eggs can get "over ripe" but I have no idea how true that is.

  • I would go with what your RE considers normal. If he/she isn't worried, then I think you are fine.

I always trigger on Clomid and I trigger somewhere between 18 and 22, meaning my follies are probably around 20-24 at time of ovulation. I'm not sure what it would look like if I didn't trigger. That's an interesting question.

Hope everything works out for you!

  • During my first Clomid cycle, each pelvic ultra sound showed two good follicles, until the final pelvic ultrasound, when the RE told me that the larger one had "snubbled" the smaller one. Its the body's way of avoiding multiples. Isn't that crazy? I know my RE does the trigger shot when the follicles are at the optimum size, but I am not sure what that exact size is. I should ask next time....
