Long term experience with Magic Sleepsuit?

I keep thinking about buying Baby Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit, but I'm curious about long term use of them. Does anyone here have experience with this? I know I hear a lot of great things about them in the first week or so of use, but I never hear anything from long term use. Also, does anyone have experience with transitioning out of the sleepsuit? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Long term experience with Magic Sleepsuit?

  • DH and I bought one of these for DS around your LO's age. It did work for a while. But around 6-7 months, he was sleeping terribly with or without the suit. That's when we decided to get the No cry sleep solution and start teaching him to put himself to sleep. The suit didn't work for well for helping him put himself to sleep because being constrained just pissed him off. We no longer use it and we've seen some improvement in his sleep after implementing some of the tricks in the No Cry Sleep Solution.

The suit wasn't really a long-term solution, just a short-term solution. I kind of wish I had put in the hard work earlier and worked on developing good sleep habits. It's hard because once you go back to work all you want is a good night's sleep.

    I hope this helps.

  • We've been using it since about 4-5 months or so. Just prior, our LO stopped sleeping through the night (he did a 6 hour stretch) and was waking every 2-3 hours. We were miserable. Initially, from birth to 3 months, we swaddled him. We stopped swaddling and used a regular sleep sack, and it worked fine for a month or so (he didn't sleep through the night, but was making 4-5 hour stretches), then things went really downhill. That may have been because he was ill during that time period, or because he started teething, or a million other things (we still aren't sure). In any case, the magic sleepsuit was amazing for the first two weeks. The first night, he literally slept for 8 hours straight. But then, in the month after, he started waking up again multiple times per night. It was almost as if he figured out he could move around in the magic sleepsuit (initially, he didn't fight it). He also may have just not been sleeping great, to start, given illness and teething. We continue to use the magic sleepsuit for the long stretch of the evening (10 until 5ish) as we think he does sleep better in it than he does in a sleep sack. We are also still using an arms reach cosleeper for that long stretch (I breastfeed and it is just easier to have him in the room), and the magic sleepsuit helps stop him from rolling around and trying to sit up in the cosleeper. We're going to be phasing out the cosleeper whenever he starts trying to pull himself up, which my guess will be very soon. He's not yet even sitting independently, so we're okay with the cosleeper for now. We do the crib for the first stretch of the evening with just a sleep-sack. Our plan is to systematically transition him to longer stretches in the crib for the long stretch of the evening. Not looking forward to it (I'm sure I will be going back and forth a lot). We've also used a lot of the strategies from No Cry Sleep Solution. I'm not a huge fan of CIO methods so I've been trying to avoid them. I've been using a number of gentler strategies. They take time and patience, but do work. Ultimately, when we transition LO to the crib, we'll also be phasing out the magic sleepsuit. Particularly as it gets warmer out (the sleepsuit is quite puffy and warm).
  • we've been using it since about 3 months old. It worked great for a few weeks and then they started waking for paci's a lot. We did gradual extinction for a few nights and that was it. We still use the sleep suits and for the last two months or so, they've been STTN from 7pm - 5-6am.  DD does frequently escape out the top of hers somehow though, so we are thinking of trying a few naps this weekend without it to see how it goes.

  • LO never slept through the night in it because we used the Rock N Play but it was my magic suit to get him to nap instantly.  He transitioned just fine out of it for naps. He was a late roller (started simultaneously when he started crawling at 6.5 months) and as soon as I saw him roll over in it we stopped using it without any problems (probably because he can make himself comfy on his tummy).

  • It didn't help us w/ sleep much at all neither shor tor long term. We continued to use it because he was putting his hands in his mouth and it was pissing him off, and also it was good for cold weather. We just stopped so he can self soothe better.

Edit: Also, he is about to grow out of it at 7months as a 22lb baby. The weight limit on the largest size is 21lb.
