Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I worry about toys with flashing lights - thoughts?

We have a Baby Einstein activity mat with a flashing lights/music attachment. My son loves it. He now also plays with the toys he can reach but a lot of the time he is just mesmerized by the flashing lights part.

I'm worried this is just a baby equivalent to a video game or tv show that keeps him amused. I'm going to ask my pedi about this at his 4mo appt next week, but I just wondered what other moms thought and if you have talked to your doctor about it at all?

We read books to him all the time but right now it doesn't hold his interest and he turns into a fussy wiggle worm.

Re: I worry about toys with flashing lights - thoughts?

  • My son has torticollis....we had to use tons of loud flashing toys to get his attention per pedi and PT....so I don't think it is a problem unless it is all the time.
DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

  • I have an fp mat that has lights and music that you can't turn on independently.  If I turn it on DS just stares at the lights and doesn't play so I taped over them. He stares at the lights and then quickly becomes overstimulated. I want the music but not the light so I fixed it.  lol

  • Eh.. I don't think you should worry. He prob just likes how it looks! I'm sure the reading books part might interest him later when he can actually understand what's going on.

Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)

  • Wouldnt worry. Unless he's turning away or getting upset by being too stimulated he's fine.

  • Well, you probably already ruined his life. You might as well let him watch Jersey shore while eating skittles. Sleep

Probably. He doesn't have any teeth though, so I'll stick to Pixy Stix until he can chew.
