Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Moving from crib to toddler bed???

My LO is 17 months now and has decided he's going to climb out of his crib at naps and in the morning before we go in to get him.  Obviously my fear is that he's going to get hurt.  We're debating converting his crib to the toddler bed option so he's safe, but I fear that's going to be a whole other problem with getting him to stay in bed, in general.

Have any of you moved your toddler out of the crib already?  Or any advice to keep him from climbing out of the crib?

Thanks!

I haven't posted in while so forgive my out of date pic in my siggy.

Re: Moving from crib to toddler bed???

  • I know many ppl who changed to a toddler bed as early as 12 months , althought most around 15 to 18 months. My next LO is due very soon so LO will be changing to a toddler bed at 17 months. If yours is climbing out then it's time to change it, most of the time a bed railing is enough to keep them safe or make them feel that they can't just get out.

  • My daughter was 19 months when we moved her into a twin bed (her crib didn't convert).  She too was climbing out of the crib, or sometimes trying to and getting stuck on the side!  I was nervous about putting her in the twin size bed, she looked so small in there.  And at first she wouldn't stay in it.  But I discovered that if I put a baby gate up at the door so at least I know she is safe in her room she will generally just stay in her bed.  If not, she plays for a little bit and then climbs into bed when she is ready to sleep.
  • If you don't feel like he's ready, you could try a crib tent.  They have them on Amazon.  We bought one when my son was a little over 2, but it didn't fit our crib(too thick of rails)  So I sent it back, but my son only climbed out once.  He will be 3 in April, and started to climb out again but only occasionally.  We ordered his twin bed and rails and are just waiting for them to come in.
