What would you consider a healthy weight for 5'9"?

Curious. Before I had my first I was tall and skinny. Now I'm tall and not so skinny. Just wondering what a healthy weight goal should be.

Re: What would you consider a healthy weight for 5'9"?

  • I think the ideal weight is 100 lbs for 5 feet then 5 lbs for every inch after that. So for 5'9" it would be 145. Then they say give or take 10 lbs based on body type. Don't quote me on this, but I think that is what I remember.

  • 155 would put you smack in the middle of the "normal" BMI range.  Granted, most people think BMI is outdated, inaccurate, and full of variables, but it's a starting place.

  • I am 5'11" and look best at 155 or under.   I am 165 now.  I don't think it's considered overweight, but at the end of the normal BMI range.

  • I am 5'9" and I've always thought a healthy weight for me is around 150lbs (I have a medium build).  Maintaining 150 means eating right and excercising a couple of times a week. Unfortunately I haven't seen that number on the scale for a few years :)

  • I'm 5'9" and I'd have to agree that roughly 145-150 is an ideal weight, in my own experience.  BUT every body is different! Back when I used to lift weights and eat a high protein diet I wore a size 8 (*sigh*) but weighed about 155 due to muscle weight. At other times, I focused my exercise on pilates and running, so I was down to about 140 but still about a size 8. Then again, when I have no time or patience for diet or exercise, I hover around 150 and wear a size 10-12. I'm also all hips and no boobs, so consider your body type too!! Good luck!

  • It definatly depends on your type/frame. I am 5'8 with hips & boobs. I would look deathly skinny at 150. I would say 175ish with muscule tone is perfect. This is a hard question to ask a random group of women. Good luck :)

  • I am 5'7" and about 140, smack dab in the middle of a 'healthy' BMI range. Like PPs, my first guess would be 150 based on my own weight/height.

If you go by BMI alone, 158 would still put you in the 'healthy' category (just on the higher end). Like others have said though, it depends a lot on your body type, muscle tone, etc.

  • I'm 5'8" and I strive for the low 150s (not where I am at now, but that's my goal)...depending on where you are right now with your weight I would say 160-170 maybe...
  • I'm 5'6" and would like to be 145 (not close). I think 155-160 would be nice at 5'9" but it really depends a lot on your build. I'm pretty athletic.

  • I'm 5'6 and people told me I looked "too skinny" at 145lbs. I've never been thin, always the tomboy athlete with hips, boobs and a bit of muscle. Never been smaller than a size 8. I'm just solidly built I guess! I would be happy at 150-160 lbs right now but I am FAR above that number - and it's going to take me awhile and a lot of spin classes to get there!

  • I'm 165 lbs. right now and wearing a size 12. I'm smaller on top and bigger on the bottom, pear shaped? I guess.  I'd like to get down to a size 8 so I'm guessing I've got about 20 lbs more to lose before that happens.

My muscle tone has always sucked but it's even worse now b/c of the 3 months of bedrest and month of recovering from my c-section.

  • I am 5'7" and fluctuate between 125-130. I would say 140 for my build if I were 2 inches taller? I am a thin/boyish build... I'm a runner.

  • I am 5'9 and my doc said i should be around 160ish as a healthy body weight. I am not delicately built though and I have never been skinny.
