Yes, we do nurse in public when we need to. I'm pretty modest and prefer to BF privately when I can though. DD is also extremely distractable, so it's almost useless to try to feed her in a busy environment. DD refused to be covered too, so that option doesn't work for us. We do alot of feedings in the car while we're out and about.
If you do plan to get a cover, I agree with several PPs that the Hooter Hider brand is too small.
I nurse in public all the time and I never use a cover. I try to find a nice quiet corner or nurse in the car when I can, mostly for baby's benefit not mine. I feel like nursing covers, especially the fancy patterned ones, are a big sign that say "Look! I have a boob out!" I feel like the babies head and a strategically placed shirt are much more subtle - it just looks like you're holding a sleeping baby.
I have said the same thing many times myself. I have never used a cover and I NIP everywhere. Even while pushing a grocery cart. Like pp's have said I always wear a tank or cami and a shirt over top between both shirts and baby's head there is no peep show going on.

I will have to pump in public. Due to my sons cleft lip and palate he will have to use a special feeder since he won't be able to suck. I plan on just having a cover since I won't have the luxury of a baby blocking everything and I'm not sure I would feel comfortable just sitting out in public with a pump attached to me.
Yep! I love my Bebe Au Lait cover. I just wear a nursing tank under my shirt, throw the cover on and feed my kid where I can find a comfortable, semi-private place that isn't on a toilet
I don't think I am brave enough to do it without the cover. But who knows I might have to bite the bullet.
What kind of cover did you ladies get?
hooter hiders are good
I can't remember if I ever tried w/ out a cover for dd 1, but dd 2 started hating and pulling at the cover from maybe 4 months, so I got good at the "pull up/pull down" wear a tank underneath that's low cut, and a slightly baggier shirt over the top- if anyone catches a glimpse of me while I'm doing it, they have to be TRYING to see boob, so it's there own fault. Just remember anywhere w/ a changing room will have a comfortable place to feed- mall, Target, fred meyer- I took comfort in remembering that!
I think the cover works great. And with DD I just used one of her blankets.
I got my cover on babysteals.com for 50% off so sign up for the daily email if you're not already signed up and look for a deal! Then you won't be as disappointed if the cover doesn't work out.
