Hi everyone!
I also posted this in Pregnant after 35....
I am 7 weeks-ish pregnant and morning sickness has started to happen. It's mainly just nausea at the moment.
When
I was hungover in the past, a glass of club soda with 3-4 dashes of
Agostura Bitters was the BEST cure for nausea. Seriously like a new
woman within minutes of drinking it. I know that morning sickness and hangovers are different, but bitters is well known for being an upset stomach remedy in general so I'm curious as to whether it would be good in this case.
Now, I am FULLY AWARE of it's alcohol content, so please don't comment on that. That's not really what concerns me since I'd only be using a tiny bit. I'm more concerned about the fact that it's herbal. I've googled it and can't seem to find sufficient info as to whether the herbal-ness of the bitters would be bad for the baby.
I was wondering if A. anyone else used this remedy, and B. whether they've heard from a doctor or friend that you should or shouldn't drink it.
Thanks!
Re: MS remedy question...
I guess I don't understand why you would not worry about a little alcohol but would worry about an equal amount of something herbal.
just saying.
Yes.

preface. it is your pregnancy and you can do what you want and it is not for me to judge.
I get that some herbs can be bad and alcohol especially in early pregnancy can cause tons of bad things that none of us want. So I guess what I was saying selective worrying seems silly to me that you would say that you feel it is ok to have a little alcohol but are worried about an equal amount of another bad substance.

This actually turned out to be fairly interesting and now I'm glad you asked. The main/active ingredient in Angostura Bitters is an herb called Gentian. It turns out it's not suggested for pregnancy due to the fact that it's a mutagenic (physical or chemical agent that changes genetic material). It should also not be used during lactation. As well, it can have an affect on the menstrual cycle if taken regularly.
I hope this helps....and damn! I love that stuff for tummy issues :0(
Thank you for the herbal list. Unfortunately, they don't list the specific ingredients on the bottle (secret recipe) so I suppose I won't be partaking since I wouldn't want to take a chance. I was hoping tons of people would respond saying, "it's the best!" and "go for it! the doc said it's perfectly fine!". Oh well :-)
The reason I'm not concerned about the alcohol content is because the amount you would use is so small, it's practically considered a non-alcoholic drink (like non alcoholic beer for example). You only use a couple dashes...less that a teaspoon.

I've been eating Ginger Altoids, but I'm starting to get sick of them too. I once had some delicious chewy ginger candies by The Ginger People. I'll have to go find them again.
