VBAC

Hypothetical Question

I, like many on the board here, switched providers for this pregnancy.  I am now under the care of a midwife, but she is still a part of the same OB/GYN office I used with my first pregnancy.  This means that my former OB could be on call the day that I deliver.  Granted, my midwife will be with me the entire time of labor and delivery, but the thought has crossed my mind of what I would do if my former doctor tried to come into my room during labor.

So my question for you ladies is "What would you say to your old provider if they came in while you are attempting your VBAC?"

Right now my thought is to kick him out of the room, but I hope I would act in a more mature fashion in reality.

Re: Hypothetical Question

  • I guess it truly depends on the situation... I know this sucks but chances are your Dr doesn't remember your c/s or the reason for it unless they read your chart.

  • Honestly I don't know.  I wouldn't go to a practice where my old OB worked*.  I haven't seen her since my 6 week postpartum appointment and don't care to ever see her again.  If she walked in while I was in labor, it would seriously screw with my ability to stay positive and calm about my VBAC.

*This is based on my personal experience and the fact that I have a lot more options available to me for VBAC.  I know a lot of people don't have those options and they may not feel as strongly about their old OB, so I'm not saying it's wrong to go to the same practice.

  • I guess it is more of an emotional attachment of disappointment that I have with my previous provider.  I know he did what was right at the time, but when I am in the middle of a VBAC, I don't want those feelings surfacing again.

  • Well, I don't have ANY issues with how my first labor and birth were handled. I went to the same hospital for my VBAC, and I didn't see the doctor who performed my c/s, but I did see the midwife who was with me for the bulk of my labor. She had worked past her shift time to stay with me. When I saw her, laboring with my VBAC baby, I assumed she wouldn't remember me, but she smiled and waved, and I smiled and waved back. When the midwife attending me came back in the room, I was like, "Inger is here! She was with me last time!" It was cool to see her again, but neither of us were in a position to really reconnect and chat or anything!
  • I guess you can look at it this way - if your old provider happens to be on call, you'll know exactly where he stands on C/S and be ready to fight.  Instead of being blindsided by someone new.

Though, I personally won't be going to a practice where all the doctors aren't on the same page.  The first time around, I was in the hospital for 60 hours before my C/s.  I had 3 fantastic doctors who were willing to let me continue with the induction/pushing and help me along the way.  Then the B*(#@ came on duty and it all went to pot.

  • It would mess with my head, but I'd know exactly what to say. You let that induction get screwed up, and I will not have a c/s unless it is an emergency! (All the while thinking that someone besides him would need to decide it was an emergency.) That is if there was a problem. If he came in being supportive...no big.
