Metformin?

Has anyone actually heard of anyone having success with just Metformin?  I went to my first RE appointment today and as long as my glucose test comes back that I have an insulin issue this is what he suggests.  He wants me to do just Metformin first and then combine it with clomid.  I only have about 3 months before my DH gets deployed, so I'm not too sure about this idea.  Thanks for the help!

Re: Metformin?

  • I am still only under the care of my gynecologist, so an RE might do a little more intensive testing.  My doctor put me on Metformin straight away in February.  I think that first cycle lasted 111 days.  If you only have three months to give it your best shot, I don't know that I would be satisfied with only Metformin.  I started out at 1000mg a day, and in April I got bumped up to 1500mg a day, and now I'm taking 2000mg a day and just finished my second round of Clomid in September.  I think I would have continued to have 100+ day cycles if not for the Clomid.

Anyway, I'm just talking out of my head here.  I'd maybe give it a month, and then try to gently nudge your RE in the Clomid direction.  Maybe explain the sense of urgency you are feeling, that might help.  By the by, I'm in the Atlanta area as well.  Nice to see another local.  Good luck!

    I HAVE CHILDREN.

  • I just started metformin about 6 weeks ago and had my first O sometime within the last week or two!! I had NO success with clomid, so my RE put me on met and we will be adding clomid as soon as af comes. ?I went from 500mg-2000mg very quickly with no side effects, so that may have helped also. ?

I understand how you feel about not wanting to do the Met alone for a month- september was a LOOOOONG month for me because of that. ?If you want to- try talking to your RE about it. ?Mine told me it can take up to 2 weeks for the met to kick in fully, and depending on how long it takes you to get up to your maximum dose (it took me 9 days) than you have to figure that in too. ?So that may be the reason he wants to wait, Have you tried Clomid at all yet? ?If not, I don't see the harm in starting them together :) Good luck!?

  • BTW...I just realized you are from Atlanta...DH and I are from NY and are in ATL right now for a conference (actually I'm nesting from the mac store in the north point mall in alpharetta- dh is drooling over the mac stuff :))
  • Thanks for the help!  I have tried Clomid the last 2 cycles with no luck.  Everything I was reading made it seem like the first couple of cycles could take a while.  I may try to see if I can talk my RE into trying both since I may only end up with one more shot.  I love Atlanta!

  • Fun.  I love the Mac store.  I read your post below about something fun to do in Atlanta, but figured you had already found something.  I can't believe the aquarium was closed (I must admit I haven't been yet).

  • My sil got pg on her 1st cycle on met.  Good luck.
  • i think it depends on your personal hormones and if you O on your own or not. i've been taking it 2.5 months and it really hasn't seemed to do too much for me, but i don't O on my own at all. personally, i'd want to be a bit more aggressive w/Dh being deployed. could you maybe consider freezing some of his sperm and continuing with treatments while he's gone?
  • I did 2 cycles of Clomid in the spring - both BFN.  I then relocated to another state and my new MD put me on Met- ER. I have been on Met -ER since July and will continue on Met-ER and add on Clomid again starting later this month.  However, my DH is here with me.  In ur case, I'd tell the MD about DHs deployment and start the Clomid ASAP!!  It will not hurt and perhaps you'll have GL and get a BFP right away.  Best wishes!!!
