how are you or did you eat prior to your glucose test?

I am thinking of taking mine today.  I was instructed to eat breakfast or lunch as I normally would, then 2 hours later drink the syrup, then have blood drawn an hour later.

So for breakfast, I had 1/4 cup white rice w/ veggie sausage and egg beaters. Then I had 1/4 of whole wheat waffles with literally a dizzle of syrup plus a tbsp of cottage cheese and maybe 1/4 cup of mixed banana/grapes/strawberry. Oh then maybe 2 oz of OJ.
I'm so nervous I would fail! The Mayo Clinic website suggested fasting the night before and just taking the test first thing in the morning. But my OB said to eat my breakfast normally.

I have a very petite friend who you wouldn't think would fail her GTT because physically she was very healthy but she did =(

Now I'm having second thoughts and thinking i should do this tomorrow instead and do what Mayo Clinic suggests to do.

What are you doing or how did you prepare?  I'm not wanting to fake a pass but I'm wondering why Mayo Clinic suggests differently than my OB?

Re: how are you or did you eat prior to your glucose test?

  • oh and BTW, that's not how I would normally eat breakfast. For some reason, I was hungrier than I thought! Yikes!

  • I wish I could eat. I was instructed to fast! Ugh.
  • I think the Mayo Clinic info is for the 3-hour glucose test.  You don't need to fast for the 1-hour test.  I will probably just avoid simple carbs on the day of my 1-hour test, and make sure I get enough protein in.  My test is at like 2pm though, so I'll probably just eat lunch around noon and call it good.

  • i was instructed to fast for 12 hrs prior.

  • With my DD I was told to fast.  This time, I was told to eat normally.  I plan to eat normally, some cereal and probably a banana.

  • Sooo I was supposed to do my test on Friday, drank the juice first thing in the morning and drove to the doctor. Due to a snow storm it took over an hour and 45 minutes. I felt horribly sick by the time I got there for my appointment and it was also to late to do the blookwork. I have to go back in a month and redo it, and my doctor told me to eat. I said I didnt eat because I usually have Ensure, which has a ton of sugar in it. He said that would be fine or to have a bowl of cereal. He said to definitely not drink it on an empty stomach. I had a horrid headache and an upset stomach the rest of the day...

  • When I took the glucose test while pregnant with DS I was instructed to fast and again during this pregnancy I was instructed to fast 12 hours prior.

I wonder why some OBs would tell women to eat breakfast and some to fast? Seems weird.

  • I was told to fast when I had DD.  I haven't had my orders to take the test this time around (will on Wednesday) but I intend on fasting regardless of what they tell me this time around.

  • I didn't eat anything special before my 1 hour one. They however did give me a 3 day high carb diet to follow before my 3 hour.

  • My doctor told me that I didn't have to fast the morning of my test, but I should avoid simple carbs. Just to be on the safe side, I think I'm going to protein-it-up for breakfast that day...maybe a veggie and cheese omelet or something like that. I figure it can't hurt! I wouldn't do it today if you already had the OJ; my doc specifically told me to avoid juice.

  • My RX specifically said there is no preparation needed on my part.  So I just scheduled it for tomorrow at 11.  I may or may not eat breakfast before - depends on how busy my morning is.

  • I just came back from my 24 week appointment and got the instructions for the glucose test next time. I also am supposed to eat normally. The nurse even said, "don't have a lot of sugar, but if you normally have an OJ in the AM, still drink that because we want to see what your body is doing with your normal intake." I wonder if the differing instructions have to do with slightly different ways they do the test? I would definitely do what your OB says to do, because it would be horrible to have to redo it!

  • I took it fasting.  My OB said I could do it fasting or not, but definitely said no sweets, fruits, or juice before the test.  I would wait until tomorrow because of the syrup and orange juice.

  • My dr just said to eat a normal breakfast. I had planned to just go high protein and eat cottage cheeese or eggs or something. My test is at 8am, so I can just eat a little and then have real breakfast afterwards.

  • I'm jealous of all of you who get to do the 1-hour test.  My doctor has moved along to giving everyone a longer test - I have to fast for 8 hours prior, show up and have my blood drawn, then drink the drink, and then have my blood drawn again an hour later, and again 2 hours later.  So I have to sit at the doc's office all morning, hungry.  Argh...  I sooo better pass!!

Yes, this is for my first test.  This is what they give everyone.

  • I will have mine done in a few weeks. My OB said I don't need to fast, and that by eating, it should make the drink sit easier. He said don't go eating a bunch of donuts or anything, but that fasting is not necessary. I'll probably just eat a lot of protein that day, things like eggs, greek yogurt, cheese. Not my usual after-lunch treat of girl scout cookies. :)

  • My test was early in the am and I did not eat before I drank the drink. My instructions said that I did not need to fast but I thought it would better my chances if I did and since it was so early in the am it wasn't a huge deal to just eat breakfast later. I did feel a little sick after drinking it on an empty stomach, but I survived and I was fine the rest of the day. And I just found out yesterday that I passed! Woo hoo!

Yes, this is for my first test.  This is what they give everyone.

I recently switched practices, and my old practice did it this way. Their instructions said to fast for 8 hours, drink the drink at the office, and that there would be 2 blood draws. Thankfully, my new practice gave me the drink to drink at home, then I go there, they take blood, and done! There definitely seems to be a wide range on how this test is given.

  • If I was you I would ask your Dr. what you should do and follow their instructions.  If they say to fast, then fast, if they say don't fast then don't fast.  Being diabetic myself I would suggest you don't change your everyday diet for the test otherwise it may not be accurate based on your daily situation.

    GL!

  • This is my third baby, and for each I was instructed to fast for 12 hours. I don't see how there could be such discrepancy between doctors. Of course you're going to have more sugar in your system if you've eaten, carbs or not, so won't you get a false impression? Whatever, I would call your dr.

  • You can eat BEFORE?!

here in Canada, we are told NO FOOD after a certain time the night before and the only thing we can drink is water the morning of.

I wish I could eat. I was instructed to fast! Ugh.

This...however I think I'd skip carbs altogether b/c they break down into sugars (regardless of being complex or simple) and fruit.  I don't know when your's test is and how feasible eating a turkey wrap and water is.  I also don't know how a regular meal will affect your blood sugar readings. Hmmm..

  • I was not told to fast and just eat a normal breakfast prior to taking the test. I ate a piece of toast with peanut butter on it and drank water. I am so glad I ate something because the drink made me feel really sick and I would have felt a lot worse had I not eaten anything. By the way, I passed the 1 hour.

they are just checking to make sure your pancreas can keep up with the demand of pregnancy.......is it producing enough insulin, its not the end of the world if u dont pass justmeans u will be most likley on a special diet is all...

this.  My appt was at 7am this morning though...unfortunately I failed.

I also have to eat a specific diet for three days before the 3 hr test and again fast in the 12 hours prior....

Isn't it weird how different each place is?  I would recommend you do whatever you are instructed to do though...

Well just that she is really healthy, exercises everyday even during her pregnancy and seriously is a health nut.
She's 5ft and about 95lbs prepregnancy. But I know what you mean.

  • My test is a food test so I was given a specific breakfast to eat, and then they draw my blood 2 hours after I eat. The list is 2 eggs, 2 pieces whole wheat toast, 1 banana and 1 glass of OJ.

oh no that sucks. I had the lemon lime flavor one. I drank it chilled as recommended and it wasn't too bad. At least I didn't feel sick or anything.

Sorry you have to do that again =(

I was instructed to eat as normal...I would think that if you tried to eat differently than you normally do the test would give you inacurate results.
