middle back pain??

I've been getting a sharp pain in my middle back- right along the bra line and on the right side.  It's worst when I'm sitting.. it used to just be when I was on the couch.. now it's when I'm driving/riding, in the office, etc etc... and it's getting worse and really painful.  I try sitting against a heating pad, and DH rubs my back, but it's only temporary relief.

Does anyone else have middle back pain?  I wonder what is causing it-- the baby's position maybe?  I mentioned it to my OB, and she gave me some back-stretching exercises to do.. they are temporary fixes too.  I'm thinking about seeing a chiropractor, but I'm not sure if he'll be able to do anything.

Re: middle back pain??

  • That's exactly the kind of pain my chiro fixes for me.

Sounds like a rib or vertebrae out of place.

  • I am having the same pain. It really only hurts when I am sitting for too long. Ouch. I think it maybe where the ribs are spreading in the back. That's just a guess.
  • Thanks, Token.  I just made an appointment with the chiropractor.  Pandi, I'll let you know if it helps me!

  • Yes! This pain started for me at around 20 weeks and is continually getting worse. I have scoliosis, so I'm guessing its related to that. A visit to a chiropractor may be in my near future, as well.

  • Yep, me too.  Always happens when I sit in one position too long.  Going for a walk sometimes helps.
  • Mine is def. a muscle issue. I got a bigger bra, which helped *a little*.  heating pad, stretches and rubbing are better, but it's the giant belly throwing my muscles out of whack.  I know how painful it can be to do anything but lay down!!
  • Sounds like rib pain.  There is a tiny joint between the vertebra and rib bones, but it can be majorly painful it it's irritated.  Probably a result of shifting center of gravity, more weight from growing breasts, etc.  A chiropractor should be able to help a lot with that, along with the heat and stretching.

  • I haven't had terrible lower back pain this pregnancy (just on days when I'm stupid and wear heels), but the middle back pain has been awful.  Seeing a chiropractor would likely help, but I haven't gone because I'm not sure how much they could do without having X-rays (it seems to me like it'd be a liability to do an adjustment without an X-ray) and I've never had them done.

  • My chiro's office doesn't do x-rays on anyone, ever. It seems more common in the States to do them, but it's not necessary. They should be able to tell by feel what's wrong - that's what they go to school to learn to do.
