If you considered/have an IUD

I want to get the Mirena IUD but just found out that my insurance does not cover it.  I still have to call the Drs office to find out how much it would be without insurance.  So

Re: If you considered/have an IUD

  • I had one in the past.  My old insurance covered getting it.  Then my insurance changed, and when I had it removed so we could TTC it actually cost me to get it out :P  I don't remember how much, $75 or so probably.

I'm looking into whether or not my new insurance will cover getting another one.  Even if it doesn't, I still want to get it.  If you average out the cost of BCP versus the up-front cost of an IUD, it's almost always cheaper in the long run to get the IUD.  Plus, I really like the fact that once it's in, I don't have to remember to do anything.  No taking pills at the same time every day, no condoms, no worries.  (We're also planning on waiting a couple of years before TTC again.)

  • I talked to my midwife and she said if insurance didn't cover it I would be paying around $900. Fortunately my insurance does cover it so I'll be getting one in the next few months.

She did mention that there is another IUD just like Mirena but it has no hormones in it. Does your insurance not cover any IUDs?

  • My insurance covers it & I don't have to pay anything b/c I have met my deductible  but when I want it taken out I will have to pay for that which my dr. office told me its like $190 unless I have another 1 put back in which will be covered by my insurance.  The $190 is still worth it b/c my birthcontrol pills I used to take (generic) was still $20 & soo over time it will pay for itself.
