Red Lobster

So my husband and I got a Red Lobster gift card for our Anniversary this past week and we want to go but I'm not so sure about all of the seafood.  Has anyone been since they have been pregnant and if so, what did you get?

Here is a link for what I would like it's the Admiral's feast, I really wanted Lobster but then I heard it's pretty high in mercury so figured I would steer clear of that.

Thanks a million ladies!

Re: Red Lobster

  • Shrimp, scallops, clams, and flounder are all on the lowest mercury list, you should be fine!

  • My ob is completely against eating tuna while pregnant due to mercury levels but told me lobster was ok.

  • I haven't been, but they say you should definitely not rule out seafood while pregnant. Supposedly it helps with speech development! I have been eating a lot of shrimp, scallops, tilapia and salmon.

  • I've been eating lots of seafood, gotta get that omega-3! This link says to limit lobster to no more than 3 6-oz servings a month, so you should be fine!

  • I think the Admiral's Feast looks fine.  I've had lobster too - I just keep my seafood to once a week or less (generally less, just due to opportunity.)  Having it once isn't going to hurt you or the baby, but you obviously don't have to take my word for it!

Lobster has less mercury than shark, tuna (fresh or frozen - not canned; canned light has less), swordfish, etc.

Per the American Heart Association, pregnant women should limit their seafood to types that have less than 1 ppm (part per milligram) of mercury, and limit the quantity to 12oz a week.  Lobster has 0.31 ppm mercury, so it'd be considered "safe" to have up to 12oz of lobster in a week, as 0.31 is much less than 1.

Also, when you're ordering lobster, a 1lb lobster is not actually 16oz of lobster that you'd be eating, because the shell and parts that you don't eat weigh a lot too!

  • Generally animals at the top of the food chain are the ones high in mercury. Avoid shark, swordfish, and tuna and you should be fine. The fatty acids in fish are really important for baby's brain development.

  • Everything in moderation is fine. If you aren't sure just ask your doctor. Mine says it is fine as long as you aren't eating it every day. I had red lobster once during my pregnancy. I say go and enjoy yourself!!

  • My doctors said to limit the amt of fish you eat to 3 oz a day; if you have to have it.  My thoughts are unless you are eating 4 lobsters a day, everyday, then you may want to take a break.  Otherwise live a little and enjoy a lobster claw and tail.  It will be ok!  I'm not a fish eater so when the mood strikes I indulge (minus sushi)

  • I got the wood grilled lobster, scallops and shrimp, but I haven't liked shrimp since I got pregnant so I just had them add more scallops instead! It was so good. And they say as long as you don't eat too much then it is actually good for you (like most seafood).
