Reagan? Middle Name thoughts?

Reagan is at the top of our list for our little girl's name. We're not 100% sure because DH wants to wait until longer to "decide", but it's definitely our favorite. First of all, thoughts on the name? Is it popular in your area? I know it's unisex in a way, but to me it says girl. I want people to read her name and know she's a girl.

Secondly, we have no clue on middle name. My grandmother recently passed away and her name was Sara Emma. I thought of going with either Reagan Sara or Reagan Emma, but am not sure-neither seems too much like a middle name. I'm also wondering if Reagan needs a one syllable middle name. Thoughts? Suggestions? TIA!

ETA: I know Reagan is technically a presidential name, but I don't think of it that way at all and it's definitely not the reason for the name. Is that the first thing that comes to mind?

Re: Reagan? Middle Name thoughts?

  • Not a fan of it for a few resons:

    1. Trendy

    2. President's name - trend

    3. I just think of the girl from Exorcist

    4. I'm a Democrat :)

I actually really like Sara Emma as it is!

  • I really like the name, and my first thought really isn't the president. I think it works well for a girl. A good number of posters here arent fans of presidential names though.

I think either MN can work well since it has special meaning. How often is the full name going to get used anyway? I do think that Sara works better than Emma. And it 's not the typical MNs, such as Grace and Marie.

  • How does any American NOT think of the President first and foremost?  Are we really that busy and occupied with other issues that we don't recognize our former leaders' names?

It's a LN, not a FN.  I despise the LN turned FN trend.

Haha...point taken. Of course I know of (and actually very much liked) Ronald Reagan. But to me, it's just not the first thing that comes to mind. I guess because I have heard of little girls named Reagan and always liked it. I think of the adorable little girl down the street when I was growing up whose name was Reagan. This is why I posted it though...I want to know what comes to mind when hearing the name, so I definitely appreciate the comments and opinions.

I do think of the president, just not first. As a first name, it's a very nice girl's name, so I think of smart girl before I think of Mr. President. I also like the name Kennedy for a girl. Yes, I will eventualy make the association with JFK, but first I think "what a nice sounding name."

  • I like the name a lot. Obviously, I think of the president, but it too isn't my first "thought" when I hear this name,

I think Reagan Sarah sounds better than Reagan Emma. Do you have anymore family names? Your MN, your mom's, your MIL, etc??

  • The first thing that comes to mind with the name Reagan is The Exorcist, followed shortly by the president. I've never really cared for the name personally. It's NMS, and I think the movie was enough to kill the name forever for me.

I think either Reagan Sara or Reagan Emma sounds fine, especially with your LN. I don't know why you'd want to trade a name with family significance for a filler one-syllable MN like Grace or Rose.

Clearly you didn't watch The Exorcist at an impressionable age.

  • I've never even seen The Exorcist (embarrassed to admit it!) Maybe I should, especially since we're seriously considering naming her Reagan.

Yeah I think that should be required viewing before considering that name.

  • I love the name Reagan. We loved the name so much that we named our youngest daughter Reagan. We liked the fact that it was an Irish name. We also liked the meaning behind it "little ruler", and she does rule the house for now. I think Reagan Sara sounds good together.

  • I knew someone with this name growing up and while she was a nice girl, I've never liked this name.  It just sounds so ugly to me...sorry.

I've never seen The Exorcist either and my daughter is Reagan Lynn.  Lynn is a family name and was non-negotiable.

This is the ONLY thing that comes to mind.  It is NMS, but if you love it go with it. My honest first thought would be "must be a Republican family." If you are, then that works out! Wink Love both Sara and Emma though. Big Smile

  • Love the name, but I prefer the Shakespearean spelling Regan and with that spelling I obviously think of King Lear. Reagan is an Irish last name and associated with the president IMO.

  • My DD is Regan Jean.  We spelled her name this way just because we preferred it over the surname spelling.  This is the spelling they use in King Lear and in the Exorcist.  She's almost two and no one has ever made a negative comment about her name, regarding the President, the Exorcist or anything else - though sometimes people call her Ree-gan.

I think your middle names go well, I prefer something short and sweet 1-2 syllables.
