When to go to the ER

I have been having a lot of nausea and diarrhea for the last few hours.  I am dizzy and have a headache and everytime I walk anywhere I feel wobbly like I am going to fall down.  Drinking water makes my nausea worse.

I spoke to a nurse at the Dr.s office and she suggested I see my PCP since the baby is moving and I am not having any discharge.  I really think that I am dehydrated though.  I dont know whether to listed to the nurse and just go home or ignore her and go to the ER anyways.  What do you think?

Re: When to go to the ER

  • If I were you, I'd call the PCP as see if they could get me in today and if not then go to the ER!! That doesn't sound good at all. I hope all is ok, please keep us updated.

I agree with PP.  Or go to an urgent care.  Urgent Care in my area is pretty fast and they can make the determination whether or not fast-tracking hospital admission is necessary.

    I hope you feel better!

  • If you are dizzy when you get up, how are you going to get yourself to the PCP or ER?  I'd say call and get some one with you soon and call PCP.  Are you peeing at all?  Can you tell if it is dark/concentrated?  You can't go too long with diarrhea, nausea and no intake.  I'd say you need to see someone by the end of the day if it doesn't improve.  Ice chips?  Ice pops, something?
  • I have an appointment with my PCP in an hour.  I work on a medical campus so it takes me 3 mins to get to my PCP or to the ER.

  • If it were me, I would go home, pick up some gatorade on the way, pop some tylenol for the headache, force myself to drink some of the gatorade, and try to get some rest in between going to the toilet. But, I've had bouts of diarrhea that are exactly like this...headache, nausea, dizziness...all throughout my life so it wouldn't be a big deal for me. I think you'll feel less nauseated once the diarrhea stops, and you'll be able to drink more fluids as the day goes on so you won't be dehydrated. I hope you feel better soon! If you're really concerned, def get it checked out...better safe than sorry.

Some Urgent Care will not see pregnant women so always call first. I had the flu last month and went to the urgent care. The recepionist told me she didn't think the dr would see me but she went and asked just in case. The dr said he would see me but then when my flu test came back positive he wouldn't prescribe me anything!! I had to call my OB office who then called in a prescription of tami-flu for me.

  • I'd go to my PCP, I always feel like I need to have a bone sticking out of my body to go to the ER.  If your PCP says you should go to the hospital then I'd go.  But it sounds like your fluish to me. (I'm not a doctor though lol)  Feel better.  Keep us updated!
