When to switch formula--gas

My 9 day old has horrible gas, I have tried Mylicon with very little relief...when did you switch to a sensitive version?

Re: When to switch formula--gas

  • Right around a week or so, once he showed signs of discomfort from the gas.

  • Ditto. Side note: Once you find a formula that works, stick with it regardless of expense... I made the mistake of trying a new formula (with best intentions) and it's been awful for DS. I have never seen him with tears in his eyes until last night. :(

  • Right away.  Our pedi said formula is harder for them to digest than breast milk so most choose sensitive formula from the beginning.

  • At two weeks old I noticed discomfort (screaming, gruting) with the gas. I switched to Enfamil gentlease, but it seemed like it continued to get worse. Then on the ped's suggestion I switched her to Similac Sensitive and it has gotten better. She still is gassy, but not as uncomfortable.

  • We had the same problem. I started him on Similac Advance. He had the horrible grunting and stiffening of his body and gas. I switched to Similac Sensitive after a week. It didn't get better. After two weeks on that, I switched him to Similac Soy. That also didn't work.

Finally I made an appointment and took him to the Pediatrician and she determined he has a milk protein allergy. Which means his stomach is not mature enough to break down the formula so she put him on Enfamil Nutramigen Lipil which is already broken down completely so his belly doesn't have to do it. It smells horrible so I can just imagine how it tastes. DS took a little time getting used to the taste but I think he figured out pretty quickly that was all he was getting.

Just keep in mind that you could have to switch to something like this. Talk to your pedi about it. The doctor said at about 6 months old, he should grow out of it.

    HTH!
