spitting up--is this normal?

so all the reading i've done says that spitting up is normal to a point. but as a FTM it's hard to know what that point is. I am thinking of calling the ped this week but thought i'd see what your experiences have been too.

My LO is about 3.5 weeks. He is small--in the 5th percentile. I think this is part of the reason i'm worried about all the spitting up. it makes me wonder if he's keeping enough milk down. There does not seem to be a consistent pattern. Sometimes he spits up right after eating several times. Sometimes he spits up 1-2 hours after eating (so basically right before his next feeding) He spits up pretty  much any time i put him down on his back. (he's sleeping in a RNP really well, but i try to get him in the PNP during the day some to get him used to sleeping on his back, but he cries and spits up almost instantly.)

I try to position him on the breast so that he is upright, and i also try to elevate him on the changing table which is a little hard.

any opinions on whether this sounds like "normal" spitting up? thanks.

  • Try burping him right before you attempt to lay him flat, it could be leftover gas, if that doesn't work, then yes, I would call your pedi, because spitting up every time you lay him flat, if it's not just a gas bubble, is not normal.

  • Spitting up, sometimes called physiological or uncomplicated reflux, is common in babies and is usually (but not always) normal. Most young babies spit up sometimes, since their digestive systems are immature, making it easier for the stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus (the tube connecting mouth to stomach).Babies often spit up when they get too much milk too fast. This may happen when baby feeds very quickly or aggressively, or when mom?s breasts are overfull. The amount of spitup typically appears to be much more than it really is.A few statistics (for all babies, not just breastfed babies):Spitting up usually occurs right after baby eats, but it may also occur 1-2 hours after a feeding.Half of all 0-3 month old babies spit up at least once per day.Spitting up usually peaks at 2-4 months. Many babies outgrow spitting up by 7-8 months. Most babies have stopped spitting up by 12 months. If your baby is a ?Happy Spitter? --gaining weight well, spitting up without discomfort and content most of the time -- spitting up is a laundry & social problem rather than a medical issuehttps://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/reflux.html#normal

  • try holding him in an up right position for 30mins after a feeding. We are FF, and dr has us doing that, plus adding a tsp per ounce of rice cereal to help with acid reflux. BF babies shouldnt need the rice, so just try to sit 'em up for a bit after to help get digestion flowing in the right position. Its hard, and tiring... but has really helped! Our LO gained almost 2 lbs in a week, after no gain for his first 2 weeks! GL!
