1 hour formula feeding sessions?

Hello ladies Smile

My 8 week old takes 40-60 minutes to drink his 3-4oz of formula.  He takes breaks a lot and sometimes gets really sleepy.  Sometimes I can tell he's not really drinking just maybe comfort sucking.

This evening he fed from 7:45pm until almost 9pm and he was awake the whole time!  Plus he's eating basically every 2 hours so I feel like I'm always feeding him.  Is there something I could be doing wrong?

Re: 1 hour formula feeding sessions?

  • My son does this everyday at like 3 am. Its so frustrating, I wish I could get him to eat faster. If you stumble across the answer keep me posted!

  • My girl does this too, but not at every feeding. I don't have any advice either.

  • Have you tried different types of nipples? That may help. My DD did this and then we switched to medium flow nipples and it's much better.

  • that was going to be my suggestion, try level 2 nipples.

  • We had this problem as well.  I asked our pediatrician about it, and his advice was that if they are taking that long to eat they are not hungry enough at feeding times.  He said a bottle fed baby should take no more than 30 minutes to finish a bottle.  He also said to try to hold her off (w/ pacifier, etc) for 3 hours between feedings.  That way, she'll be hungry enough at the feeding to eat the entire bottle quickly and then be content for another 3-4 hours.  It has worked well for us.

Our Pedi said the same thing.

  • Yeah he used to feed every 3 hours but went down to 2 hours a couple weeks ago.  I really hope we can go back to 3 hours but then I guess he might want more per feeding since he sleeps through the night so he squeezes in his 25-27oz per day during the daytime.

I also do have some medium nipples but have been nervous to start using them.  He has his 2 month appointment on Wednesday so I will definitely ask then.  In the meantime I'll try the medium nipples too.

    Thank you!

  • It could very well be a wrong nipple issue... we have a few different kinds, and DD clearly has her favorites. Also, I found that if I screw the nipple on too tight, it's harder for DD to get the milk out of the bottle... I was wondering why she only drank 10 ml's in 10 minutes sometimes, and then as soon as I loosened the nipple, she inhaled the rest of the bottle. Now I screw it on just enough for it to not fall off.

  • DS did this today and yesterday, but we think it's because he's got a cold and is congested.

Normally, though, it can take him up to 45 minutes to eat (usually 30 at least).

  • I'm hopping on the finding a new nipple bandwagon. DS's favorite bottles are the playtex drop ins bottles with the slow flow latex nipples, he can get his mouth around them good and they're soft so it's more comfortable for his mouth.
