High-Risk Pregnancy

Echogenic Bowel

I just had an ultrasound done with a high risk ob for concerns of my baby's growth.  Everything looks good, baby is only measuring 11 days behind my due date.  On the ultrasound they did see that the baby's bowel looked inflamed and may be Echogenic Bowel.  I guess I am just looking for some tips and comments in regards to the severity of this?  Also, was wondering about the tests?  I have another ultrasound scheduled for 4 weeks, so I am hoping it clears up by then and I don't have to worry about it, but just in case it doesn't, I need some advice!!

Re: Echogenic Bowel

  • Are you concerned about long term issues or if it's an indicator for another problem?

  • typically its standard to test you for infections, offer CF testing and offer amnio for chromosome abnormalities.  Most likely is normal variation, but could be any of the above.  Also in some instances could be an early sign of a bowel obstruction, so you should have Fup later in pregnancy.
  • echogenic bowel can be a marker for other chromosome abnormalities (like down syndrome and trisomy 18).  If you are concerned about this, I'd ask for a referral to a maternal fetal specialist for additional ultrasounds and possibly an amnio.

Did you do the NT or other first or trimester screening?

Hope this link helps. We were looking for echogenic bowel because I'm at high risk for Cystic Fibrosis.

Don't let the link freak out out too much.  Statistics are in your favor that the echogenic bowel means absolutely nothing.  There are also different levels of echogenic bowel (how light /dark the bowel shows up in comparison to other items). It also depends on the skill level/subjectivity of the u/s tech.
